Question Cost to install ring & pinion gears?

What was the cost for anybody that has had thier gears changed? I'm talking about labor only.

Does anybdy know of a place here in So Cal that can install gears for me in my 01 GT auto for a fair price? I'm ready for the 4:10's! MarkM

in california plan on 250-500 bucks depending on where you live. 250 is appropriate... 500 is ludicrous but I've seen it charged.

check out brothers performance in corona. I think they do gears.

Long story short, I had to have my gears taken out, put into a rebuilt 5.0 differential and re-installed. My guy know's what he's doing, so he did all that in 2 hours. $70 and hour is $140, so that's what I would of been charged.

R3dn3ck do you know anybody that has used them before? I also live in southern California not too far from corona and have been looking for a shop that i can trust to do a gear swap.

I know lots of people who've spent lots of money at Brothers. It's one of the haunts of one of my clubs. They've never really gotten a bad rap from my boys so I figure it can't be that bad.

Mark... did you used to go by the handle dmark or dmark101? I grew up down there in your neck of the woods... more toward the Perris and Temecula side but same area.

I'm in Fontana, CA.

Around $200-220 sounds about right to me. i know this questions been asked a million times but what would work better for me with my auto trans, 3.73 or 4.10's? I like to take 100 mile day trips with my wife and two kids, 8 and 4 years old. Would I noticed a nice acceleration change with the 3.73's? I know that 4.10's would make a big difference but I don't know if they would make a decent traveling gear.

I'll go play around on the gear calculator website for awhile and see what I can figure out. But some real life testimonial from someone would be nice.
Thanks, MarkM

Just called Brothers: The place that does them is called American Muscle and they charge $285 to install, that's labor.

I'd stick with 3.73's if I were in your shoes, especially with the amount of engine noise at freeway speeds. With either gear you'll notice a definite difference. 4.10's will still be tolerable but your kids might not appreciate the added noise. Your call.. if you don't think they'll trip then go with 4.10's. You'll probably be personally happiest with the 4.10's.

285 isn't a bad price around there. POst up on wildhorsesclub.com and see what they say... about half of them are local to you so they all know where to go. I haven't been in LA in quite some time so I can't be too much more help.

Have fun.

redneck: thanks for the tips and I'll keep posting with my progress.

There's a guy I know that's selling and brand new set of Ford Racing 3.73's and a Dallas Mustangs speed calibrator. I might be able to get the two for around $130. We'll see.

And just for the record:I would prefer the 4.10's but I'm thinking of my family also and not just myself. Thanks for everybodys input. Mark M

prolly good to go with 3.73's. The difference from stock is still DRAMATIC so you'll be happy but it's not as bad on jacking up the rpms so the kids won't trip.

make sure the gears are NEW. Used gears have shown to be in bad shape in almost every one of the cases where I'd considered purchasing them. The price seems pretty good to me though. Good luck.
