Default Steeda Tri-Ax...

Hey Guys,

I need some help. I recently (2 weeks ago) installed a brand new Steeda Tri-Ax shifter that I purchased from Mustang Tuning. Not everytime, but maybe about 2-3 times each road trip 2nd gear will mess up. I know it has something to do with the shifter, because it never started doing that until I installed the aftermarket Tri-Ax.

I don't know if I installed it wrong (although it's pretty straight foward), or if I didn't do something that I should have been doing. When I go to shift into
2nd gear, sometimes it won't go in all of the way, and it will grind and kick itself back out. Now, I know I am shifting right, because I've never experienced this before, except for this time. Sometimes I'll even slam it into 2nd, and it still won't go in all of the way.

Does anyone know what the problem may be? Thanks in advance for your help.

What year is the car? It's either the rear "shift stop" is adjusted wrong or you're experiencing the T3650 Synchro problem.

there is like a screw on the top and bottom of the tri-ax that you should have positioned so you couldnt over shift, but could still get it in, if that screw started backing out or something it would be stoping the shifter from going into gear.

Yeah, I remember setting the stops, but I'll have to go back in there and make sure one of them didn't back out.

What is the "T3650 Synchro problem"?

They had an issue with the synchros from the factory. I'm not 100% certain what it was but they used copper instead of brass or vice-versa in the synchros and the metal expanded at different rates causing the synchros not to mesh right and causing a noticeable grinding into second (and sometimes third). It is usually more noticeable when it's colder outside and the car isn't warmed up. Most Mustang owners had the TSB done while the car was under warranty. It involved tearing out the tranny and replacing the synchros

I would check your adjustable shift stops in the shifter first to make sure since you said it didn't do it with the old shifter.

Thanks Cobra for your help.

One more...
How do I change the stops? At what position are they supposed to be at?

The tr3650 already has shift stops built into the trans. Isn't he supposed to take the shifter stops all the way out? That's what I did with my MGW.

U are correct. When i installed mine I too didnt use my shift stops for the same reason. That is what the instructions atleast recommended. I dont know if Steeda has different info though. No problem with mine shifter yet.

Well, when I first installed it, they included with the instructions on how to set the stops. So, I just assumed that I needed to do that. Every gear is fine, except for 2nd. If the stop wasn't set right, wouldn't 2nd, 4th, and R mess up too?

Also, reverse is a pain to get into with this shifter. That too sometimes, rare, but sometimes won't go in all the way. But, never had a problem with 4th...

if its not set right you could have problems in just 2nd. Go reset your stops its easy and could be your problem.

i've had my steeda tri-ax in for over a year now with no problems, the stops are out, you dont need them because like they said up there.. the t3650 has them built in.

Excuse this "noob" question, but when you say Take the Stops out, you mean just unscrew them all the way?
