Default 03 Lightning Vs Stang

I know we don't recommend or condone street racing but I thought I would post the results of a drag race I had with a co-worker this afternoon at 2 different stop lights we lined up at. I own a 01 GT convert with auto,Hypertech programmer, welded in flowmasters,Accufab plenum and 75mm throtle body and stock airbox with K and N and silencer removed and 3.73 gears. My co-worker owns a 03 stock lightning. The first light from a dead stop the lightning jumped me by a half car length and they stayed even up to 80mph. The second stop light was from a 20mph roll and I jumped him by 1/2 length and stayed ahead up to 80mph. Neither one of us had any traction issues. I don't know what the lightning runs at the track,my car ran 14.3-14.4 before I installed the throtle body and plenum and may run 14.2 now? P.S. we raced on a county highway and not on a city street.

Those lightnings are pretty damn quick.
Too damn nice to haul stuff in. I think if i want speed i'll stick to a car. <g>
Im not sure what i think of the whole Race-truck thing, like the Lightning and the Dodge Ram SRT.

Dont bring that up to my hemi lovin buddy tho. Hemi this, Hemi that.

I beat his Dodge 1500 Hemi with my 04 GT every time though, but it is kinda close for comfort, for about a grand he can get that thing beating my stang on a regular basis. Its amazing how much power you can pull from those Hemi's

Dodge is doing some pretty exciting things. apparently you can get about 1000 HP through thier 5.4L Hemi engines. Gotta say tho, that new charger is a spit in the grill of the oldschool chargers if you ask me. They shoulda given it a brand new name and really got to the drawing boards before releasing a new version of a beloved classic. Imagine if the 05 Mustang GT was a 4 door sedan.
Ugh.

I know there were a couple muscle cars that came in 4 door versions, but i say leave it at 2 doors and make it meaner than hell. Muscle cars should not be built with child saftey seats in mind.

I just hope those chargers are lighter than those lumbering massive 300C's. Yah, they got power, but they are so loaded down its rediculous. Leave the 4 door market to the 300Cs and Magnums.

Ford really stepped to bat with thier 05 gt, the new 450hp cobra is just awesome. They need to get on par with everything else or dodge is really going to get a big chunk out of ford's market. That whole HEMI name is big money.

Anyone heared from chevy? they still in business? or do they only do Corvettes now? <LOL>

When my 01 convert with auto was stock,a guy and his wife pulled alongside me with a new dodge 1500 extended cab 4x4 pickup on the highway.I was going 55mph and he stomped on it and I stomped on it after him and I couldn't pass him,we were even from 55-85 miles per hour,I did have 4 people in my car though. The truck and I came to a stop light and raced from a dead stop and they were close again but I did start to eventually pull away. As far as chevy, they are putting a 390 horse 6.0 litre in the ssr pickup now.

They just look too damn nice, thats why!

Its like the HUMMERs, not the ungly minivans they call H2, but the REAL DEAL HUM-V.
I drove those in the military, and i tell ya what, they can drive over damn near anything. A truly unstoppable 4x4. King of the mountain!
However, if i spend 100,000 to get a HUM-V i would be afraid to scratch the paint. <laugh>
Then again, i guess if i could afford a HUM-V i could afford to get it repainted.

Same goes with the Ford Lightnings and Dodge Ram SRTs, Race trucks.
I would be too afraid to scratch the damn thing. <laugh>

My wife in a stock 04 Durango Hemi and me on my stock 98 Gt from a 45mph rolling start it was real close I inched ahead of the Hemi slowly. For an SUV thats pretty good. I did buy an intake for the Hemi last week and will dyno it soon to see what it does.

Im surprised to that lightning didnt walk all over you. Its a shame SVT is dead now and no more lightnings!!! I had a 1988 lightning 12 years ago. 351 naturally aspirated i bought it from a buddy. he cammed it up and either it came stock with 4.10s or he put them in. I put some slicks on and 300lbs in the back in sandbags and pulled off a 12.76 best run. Dam thing averaged 9mpg though!!

Ive got a 2002 Ford F150 4x4 4.6 now. Ive done a few mods to it. 36" tires arent for drag, or the dam 6600lb with 4wd and all the options. I shoulda got the 5.4 motor. But i didnt buy it for a drag truck.

I bought the truck new. Man it was so hard not to buy a lightning. but i needed a truck that could do some work. I have a 320 foot paved driveway and i needed a plow for the winter and be able to get to work no matter how much snow. And putting in fence posts last year on my property, I know i easily had over 2000lbs in the back overloaded. No way in a lightning!!

Id love to have a new lightning, my dream truck back in the day. Was a GMC Syclone. Any of u guys remember those. My best friend Had one. Put your foot on the brake at a light and let that turbo spool up and let that brake go and there wasnt anything that could touch those trucks off the line. I havnt seen one on the road in 5 years. They all must be tucked away.

Firts of all there is no 1988 Lightning. The Gen 1 Lightnings were made from 93-95. Check www.svtperformance.com if you dont believe me.

Second SVT is not dead. There is no more Lightning but there is an AWD 390hp blown Sport Trac and the Shelby Cobra GT 500 still in the SVT stable.

Anyway I am also suprised he didnt spank you. Especially since your an Auto Vert.

I was expecting to get spanked and perhaps if we both went to the strip and raced a full quarter mile he would turn in the better time slip. Based on the way his truck performed I would have to guess that he might run 13.9-14.00 at the track, but that is just a guess.

Im glad they are moving away from the two seater f150 and going to the four seater. I hope they fix the roll over problem the sport trac has.

I watched a friend of mine race a '01 lightning in his '94 GT 4.6 5 speed w/ jus headers and full exhaust and he walked 3 cars on it and it was a bone stock lightning. I guess it all depends on the driver of the cars...

Someone put in a different engine because Ford would not have mysteriously put a 4.6 in random 94 Mustangs.

Either that or its not a 94.

i know for sure it is the original engine from when his older brother baught the car new 140K miles on it too. Another boy around here in Va has the same thing, his rims are the split 3-spoke and says GT mustang on the fender badges too and it's a 4.6 engine.

Well if that is in fact the case, which I still doubt, they have some of the rarest mustangs ever, because Ford didnt make a 4.6L mustang till 1996.

I have raced Lightnings twice at the track and beat both of them. They both ran 13.5's with a bad 60' time. If they could have hooked my butt would have been cooked. I could hear them comming fast at the top end. Those trucks would kill me from a 40 miles per hour roll on the street where they would have less traction issues.

You and me both Spike, I love those things. But I like being alive much more. If I bring home another toy my wife would slit my throat in my sleep. :Whaxatk:
