94-95 used the same block with a different style upper intake (I forget if it was to clear the shock tower or the shock tower brace).
I also recall they also had much different computers that made modding the 94-95 slightly more challenging.
Heads, Headers, cams, lower intake, block was all the same
upper intake, auxilary drives on front and vacuum routing was different (along with computer).
As far as what you should buy, go with what will make you happy and fits into your budget. I had a 90LX notch that was "ugly" to the average person but I loved it and it was fast as hell (which made me smile). You're only here to please yourself, don't worry about what other people think because soemone will always be dissapointed.

Now for my two cents, get a 90-93, the cars are cheap, parts are cheap, they are easy to work on and easy to make fast.
You can find an average bolt on car that's been beat on badly for $2000-$4000. If I were you, I'd spend a little more for one that's not been beat too badly, otherwise, you'll be fixing more stuff and ultimately paying more in the long run (torque boxes and twisted bodies)

87-93 are all pretty much the same, few little interior things. the big one would be the mass-air part. check out gtregistry.org for a list of changes by year.
hatches are usually cheaper, because coupes are the most desirable. i love my lx hatch

Agreed, I was saying 90+ mainly for the Mass Air vs Speed Density. You could actually go with 89 also (or 88 if it was a CA car). I remember reading that the speed density cars were faster in stock form than the mass air but the mass air cars responded much easier to mods.

65-present mustang history- ( http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z13111/default.aspx ) its got a lot of general info on the mustang from 65-present. not be all end all guide or anything. but for some one new to the mustang world it could shed some light on some things.
