i have a 1999 35yr anniversary v6(3.8l) mustang, and i am replacing the exhaust system(mid-pipe and down) most kits that i have found require that the headers be shorttys. my question is what type of headers are stock on a '99 v6 mustang?

p.s. im sort of new to the world of exhaust systems

 

They are short tube headers also known as "shorties". Long tubes you will not find on a factory car, because they cost to much to make and install. However the 3.8 is known to crack the stock exhaust manifolds so be sure to check that out. Or if they are cracked and leaking right now, this would be the time to upgrade.

 

thanks for the info. yeah ive had them replaced once already(not a cheap job) i do have one more question. i was noticing when looking at the pics of the different exhaust systems, that i didnt see any holes for O2 sensors. will those holes/slots already be on the new exhaust or will i have to make them myself?

 

They should have 2 o2 sensor bungs in them for the rear sensor.

 

Thank you. Last question....the 35th anniv. is supposed to have all the GT options, but in a V6. Does this mean that there is room enough to install dual exhaust?

 

All the bodies are the same no matter what engine or trim so yes, you can put dual exhaust on it
Just get an H pipe kit that bolts to your factory manifolds or shorty headers. Then you can use any GT style cat back system. You'll just need the exhaust hangers for the other side of the car(they will bolt right on) and you'll have to adjust the tips to sit lower since your bumper cover doesn't have the cutouts or get a GT rear bumper cover. Or just get tailpipes with tips that turn down and sit behind the bumper and aren't visible like the fox body GT's. Or just don't use tips at all, but it'll be louder in the car.

 

is that why all v6's have that nasty rattling sound by the mid pipe?

 

Not to hijack the thread but I am pretty sure (confident) that I have a crack in my driverside manifold and while I would love to get LTs I am not going to spring for that much just so I can have a new exhaust system fabbed up.

after looking at the price of replacement manifolds I looked at MACs site and saw that for a pair of ceramic coated shorties it was about the same price as buying 2 replacement stockers and I wouldn't just replace one manifold to have the other go out on me.

so is there any reason not to get the MAC shorties give the info that I posted and taking into account that I am well aware that they will not increase performance

 

There is nothing wrong with mac ceramic shorty headers.
