Default Winding Noise??

hey guys i was wondering if anyone could help me out, i bought my car about 3 weeks ago. when i started driving it there was a slight winding noise that i thought might just be power steering fluid, but it seems to be getting louder. ive been trying to figure out what it is. it sounds like its coming from the front around my alternator and the belts..... its also loud when im in like 2nd gear can anyone tell me what it is or how to fix it?

Does it get louder if you turn the steering wheel from side to side (lock to lock) while the car is parked but running? How about if you just rev the engine, louder then?

yea thats why i thought it was power steering but when i checked it, it was full. it gets loud when i rev it and when im driving and change gears. could it be transmission fluid? i was trying to find it under the hood but i havent found it yet. i just got the car a couple weeks ago. it will also do it if i let off the gas and just coast down the road....

Well it really hard to help out on a noise problem via the internet but here is a "old school" trick I learned.
Get a really long screwdriver or 3/8" socket extention & place it on the housing of the item you are thinking is bad (while it it running & making the noise of course). If you put your ear to the other end, it will be very obvious if it is the noisy item or not. It might take you a time or two to get this down, since everything will sound louder than usual, but you will get the idea.
*** BE VERY CAREFUL*** when doing this, one slip up & things can get really ugly.

FYI If you have a Harbor Frieght store near you, they sell a doctors steathscope (sp?) that is used for this as well.
Good luck.
