i love my 98 v6 auto mustang. and im looking for some different mod options, im already looking at a cold air and an exust, mabe some 4.10 gears. but it doesen seem like any one else is doing anything else. or is the next level of mods a big step and i should stick to bolt ons for a wile.

there arent many bolt-ons that actually help our car unless we have a power adder or h/c/i. gears, trac-loc, pullies, tuner, and exhaust(mostly for sound and looks) are really the only worthwhile bolt-ons. if you have an auto a shift kit or j-mod would help out but thats about it. and since you have a 98, you should definately look into getting a split-port. that would put you about even with a 99-04 v6. it think its around a 40hp gain?? not sure though.

im not fimaluar with a split port i looked for it on am but no luck.
but im interested in it.

If you would rather do bolt ons 3.73 or 4.10 gears, a CAI, new dual exhaust, and a tune will get you a nice car and then you can always do some appearance mods to make your car stand out. You won't have a high increase in HP with those mods but the gears will def make your car accelerate faster. If you really want a HP increase then nitrous or a supercharger would be a better route for you.

im not too familiar with it either. mostly because i never had to do it, but if you can find a good price on it, this is probably the best starting mod.

its more complicated than something you just buy off of AM.com.

these questions are great, but tell us what you want to achieve with your car. Do you want it to go fast in a straight line, do you want to get into autocross racing, or no racing at all and just a cruiser that can cut a corner and is quicker then a stock V6 stang? How seriously do you want to get with mods(replacing actual pieces on the motor, simple bolt ons, power adders, nitrous)? let us know your goals for you car, and we can give you a much better idea of what to get and how it will affect performance.

yeah ive only had it for a week so. i guess im looking for some good mods to get some more then stock power, and some stuff like that. i think bold ons for the time being.

alright well that helps to narrow it down some. Basic list of stuff to get that would satisfy your modding need would probably be: An UDP (underdrive pulley), CAI, Dual Cat Back Exhaust,and a tune. For suspension you should look at some Lowering Springs, a rear Sway Bar, and CC Plates. It's all simple and relatively inexpensive,compared to a supercharger or nitrous or split port swap, and will give you a little more power, lower the car for a better look and center of gravity, as well as help stiffen the ride up some to make it more enjoyable on a curvey back road. These are really the most basic mods, but I think will meet your needs the best.

edit: the only reason I didn't add gears to the list was because 1) you can't install them youself and 2) it is a very costly item to add, ~$150 for gears, ~200 for t-lock , ~350 for install, and you will need a tuner which is ~400 so somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000 for all of it. They are a great mod, and will definately increase you acceleration, but it doesn't sound like you are looking for something like that yet.

yeah thanks,
that some great info. now im not a racer but i was wondering will these mods mabe give me enough to put some basic ricers in there place. and back up some of the muscle car name. im jsut wondering. and im deffinatly going with an cold air intake as well. cause around hear the ricers think that they are the ****. and id love to take them down a few pegs.

by ricers you mean honda civic's with 120 hp, then yeah you should be able to beat them if you want, these mods aren't going to make you "fast" but you will be oh so slightly quicker then a stock 98 V6 mustang. I did list the cold air intake (CAI), just incase you were wondering what CAI meant. These mods aren't meant to really make a V6 mustang fast,but more of an enjoyable car. Because lets just come out and say it, V6 mustangs are just plain slow even the split ports like mine. Really these mods will teach you alot about basic modifications, and if you keep reading, you can learn alot about mustangs.

this is just my starter mustang any ways i plan on haveing a long history with them.
thats a lot to look into, but it will give me a bunch to work with. im gona do cold air first. will that help my gas milage? i think it would, and will the exuast rais or lower my mpg also?

the exhaust and intake should improve mpg but as a side affect of freeing up your motors air flow characteristics, it will feel as if you lost a bit of torque down low, but in fact it was just shifted up further in your rpm band, so that your car pulls better in the mid-top range of each gear. Not to mention the much improved sound you gain from an exhaust.
UDP (underdrive pulley)= ~8rwhp
CAI = ~1-2 rwhp
Dual Cat Back Exhaust ~3-5 rwhp
tune = ~8-10 rwhp
just to give you an idea of what to expect.

it's not a huge deal really, if you get those other mods I listed above, they will more than make up for the small re-distribution of torque.

every one says that cai's give like 1-2 hp but placees that sell them say that they give more.

They're full of ****.

Get yourself an Ebay CAI for like 25$ and slap a K&N filter on it, that's as good as it gets.

yep, exactly what PCola said, they are just lying, there is no chance of a fancy filter and tube giving your car 20hp or whatever ridiculous claims they made. Heck you don't even need the K&N filter really, there filters are fine, just be sure to clean and oil it with the K&N(or something of the like) filter cleaning/reburbishing kit.

no not at all. It is relatively simple and if you take your time and are not mechanically inclined then at most should only take you 30mins to 1 hour.

Well it depends on which cheap Ebay CAI you go with..the piping I got wasn't angled right so I had to do some cutting to get it to fit, but it's worth the 24$ it costed me, lol.

so i just ordered a cai and its on its way thanks for all the help. i think either exuast or an under drive pully is next. i think i should just save up for an exuast.

im trying to decide what to spend my tax refund on. i cant decide if i should go exuast, or a tuner, or an underive, or some new rims and tires, or lowering springs, or what.
if it were u what would you do?

Tuner would be most Hp, underdrive 2nd most. I think i would go for springs though, because they help looks of the stang and help in the handling department as well.
