Blew my rear end! Question on new gears..
Hey all, Ive got an 02 six banger that I blew the pinion and all the inside gears yesterday on the highway.. just blew and shattered the hell out of the inside.. Im looking at this in a positive way like "oh well now I can get new 3.73 gears ive been wanting" but i have a problem. I can get the ring and pinon 3.73 gears from americanmuscle for like $150, but I need the inner gears too. Those smaller ones that fit inside the housing.. Where would I go about buying these? And would stock replacement ones work with a 3.73 ring and pinion? Or would I have to find the inside gears to match 3.73? Thanks in advance

no its just the ring pinion and inside gears.. I dont have a terrible amount of money I lost my job recently and just started working again.. Im thinking just get the spider and side gears from ford but get the 3.73 or 4.10 ring + pinion from americanmuscle.. I dont have $$ for 8.8inch or new axles..

U'll need an 8.8 inch rear axle houseing along with 8.8 differential

yeah thell fit your car they are for the 7.5" rear end they are used
but they dont have that many miles on them i probably had them on for like 2 months id say like 300miles max on them. and yes its just the ring and pinion i bought them at American muscle |
go to ebay and grab a used 7.5" diff off of there and take the spider gears out (thats the name of those gears in the posi you broke). If you do not have a posi and broke the gears in the stock open diff. then its time ot search ebay for a ford 7.5" t-lok.

yeah its not posi its open i think (rear pass drive tire but rear driver side spins when rear pass losses too much traction).. Wouldnt it be easier to just buy the spider gears from form then a 3.73 ring and pinion from americanmuscle?

go to ebay search Ford 7.5" posi or T-lok (short for traction lock) you dont wann pay to install gears onto a open diff when you can pay the same amount of money (minus the cost of the posi) and get it installed with the new gears. spinnign one tire sucks, trust me my f150 was like that.

Well i just ordered that posi 7.5 inch with 4.10 gears..
How much of a diff will I notice driving this car? I know top speed is going to be down but acceleration.. how much faster will the car feel? any improvement on my 0-60? |
Should have a huge change in the 'butt feel' dept under acceleration. As far as a change in top speed, you really shouldn't have any change at all other than finally putting 5th gear into good use..

So it wont be actually too much quicker (maybe 1/2 - 1 second quarter mile time?) just gives it a more torqueier feel lol

If you dont think a half sec or a full seconde drop in the 1/4 mile is alot your nuts. All your going to need is a install kit that i belive you can also grab that off ebay for very cheap or americanmuscle.com sells them too.

the ring and pinion should be fairly cheap, as for the inner gears the same thing happened to me. you can get the posi-lock differential that comes with the 4 inner gears plusthe s plate inside that for i thing around 300 brand new. Its definately worth upgrading to that.

The 8.8 is a direct bolt on if you get the full rear end.

okay, so me and my father have everything installed and almost connected the driveshaft and closed the cover for the pumpkin.. and we notice a little lash between the ring & pinion. Barely enough to see it move, but you can slightly hear it. Is that much going to cause a problem? What can we do to eliminate this? A slightly bigger shim on either side? Or is a small amount of lash normal?

the best deal is use the paint the install kit comes with to see how the teeth are wearing and add shims as needed per how the wear pattern looks.

hmm.. is there a way to move the pinion back or forward? or shim it? we have both the sides where the axles come through all shimmed very tight, had to tap with a hammer lightly to get it in..

Yes you can add shims to the pinion gear to bring it out farther.
After that use the paint method where you add some paint on 2-3 teeth and spin the axles and you can see where the gears mess and you want them to be in the middle and not to the one sid eor the other and not to far out or in on the teeth. |
Sort of off topic, but not at the same time.. Don't you have to have a tuner to correct the speedo after a gear change? Or new speedo gears in the cluster?

99-04 need to be tuned, as for 94-98 i believe there is a gear behind your cluster that you need to change but don't quote me on it.
