Default Cold Air Intake

What's better, a K&N or the Mustang Tuning Cold Air?

Why do I ask? Because my K&N is plastic, and the MT one has the chrome finish and looks really nice. Any suggestions?

from what i have read, they will do the same thing, and if you are really, really lucky you may get 1hp more from the k&N, but don't expect any real differences in them...

A k&n costs about 45bux so why not just pay the extra 25bux and buy the MT cold air intake. I ordered one yesterday and i came out to 70bux after the mustangboards discount, plus they look a ton better than the stock air box.

Very nice ride Milos!

Hey I have a quick question about CAI. Here on the site there is this one: http://www.mustangtuning.com/muv6coairins.html

Now so far the only CAI I have seen that is C.A.R.B. is the K&N. Forgive me as Im no mechanic, but if it isnt C.A.R.B. then when I take it in to smog dont I have to put the stock back on to pass?

Milos ... actually if you are using a Carnauba and waxing every 2 weeks, it will actually begin to dull it from the wax build up. What wax are you using or are you using more of a cleaner wax?

I got the MT CAI and I'm pretty happy with it. Was a pain in the @ss to put in but it was worth it. It also didn't help that it was just a bit different because it was built for a 3.8

That cold air looks to be a better design than the ones made for the 4.6. The bend isnt directly before the MAF. the problems come when the air cant get a straight path through the MAF sensor. On the 4.6s the bend causes the air to slam into the side of the MAF sensor and it cant read it correctly. That one looks like it should straighten out the flow just fine.

The filter in the wheelwell sucks though and I actually think that the K&N looks better than my old MAC setup.

There is no difference what so ever other than it cleans up the engine bay a lot and makes a pretty damn cool sound when you give it some gas

I first though that the metal tubing is what causes that cool little sucking sound but it isnt. My K&N FIPK does the same thing. It almost sounds like a tiny turbo preparing to spool......

Just for everyones info we did recent dyno tests on intakes one my '04 gt and the results wernt to great. Stock intake...219rwhp, Stock w/ k&n filter...221rwhp, Full k&n intake...220rwhp, "Pro-Motion tuning custom intake" aka: Ebay intake w/ Bombz filter...223rwhp.

Like i said the results of aftermarket intakes are all pretty much the same as stock and not a noticable amount of gain.

sorry man but i dont believe that a stock intake w/K&N made more power than the full K&N FIPK.....

Those are some disappointing numbers for your car. Is yours an auto? Stock GTs put down around 240whp.

We did the same K&N on a '02 GT and a '00 and the results were almost identical! my g/f's is the '00 and hers is completely stock and it's at 218rwhp and it's a 5spd. We did the k&n cai on a mach 1 and it was 3hp gain over stock! Just so you know 219 is the stock rear wheel hp unless you somehow have a factory freak motor making more power. I know this since we have my car on the dyno alot trying different products, along with having it on another dyno. the HP number are SAE corrected also rather than what most shops show you as the "STD" mode which will show you that you making about 10more hp. Trust me, we dyno cars everyday and I've seen some crazy stuff....like the 519rwhp Vortec foxbody we did this morning.

well how do all these guys on mustangboards put down 260 and 270whp with bolt ons?

As I mentioned...these numbers were takin from a completely stock '04 GT...mine! no tune and stock exhaust. These other mustangs with bolt ons such as CAI/x-pipe/full exhaust/TB&plenum should average 240-260 maybe a little more with a good tune.

I did a '03 gt with bbk CAI/ SpinTech o/r-x and 1-chambers it put out 231rwhp with out a tune....then I tuned it with a Diablo tuner and it jumped up to 246 and that was messing with fuel and timing along with rev limits.

how big of a fan were u using to dyno that thing? thats kinda important when your testing intakes... 3hp, leaves me to believe something isn't accurate...

like jeredan said i fail to see how a K&N filter got more then the full intake... that kinda proves things weren't done correctly...

Milos, remeber i was v6 guy, i'm not going off with the ego, i just see it all 1st hand and deal with it everyday at our shop.

Grimmz, we use two fans, a big 4' rolling fan, and a floor set "turbo fan" and they both move alot of air, so the air quality isnt bad. You'll be suprised when you see it yourself that you've spend $200 on an intake thats claimed to give you 10hp.....yea at the crank. Theres only been one car i've seen that we dynoed with a custom intake from Weapon R on the Scion TC and it gained 13hp over stock. This was a prototype intake since our shop owner is great friends with Weapon R owners.

Dyno's dont lie, we've had dynojet techs check ours out after the instal to make sure everything was done properly and set up correct and everything is accurate.
