Default Help a new guy out - wheelsets

I just recently picked up a 99 GT Convertible. The car is in great shape and almost entirely original. But it's really squirrelly around turns, even at low speeds.

The tires are currently 225/55 on the original 16s with good tread, but they are getting kind of old. I want to replace both the rims and tires, so I've got lots of options (and i'll store the original rims for now).

I'm not looking to race or show off. What I want is a combination that provides me with the most stable ride - good handling, good cornering - I just want something that feels safe and rides well.

I'm planning on going to 17" rims, with a width somewhere between 245 and 275. But I was also thinking of 18" rims - not sure if that would improve things or not.

Give me some ideas from you guys who have tried it all...

Thanks
