Tire size on a 17" x 9"

Is a 275/40/R17 the correct size? What number determines sidewall height?

Good size. Middle number determines sidewall height. Common misconception is the middle number is in Millimeters, but that's not necessarily true. 245/35/17 would also fit, but have low sidewall.
