takes a tad over 5 qrts with filter so grab 6 and have a little extra.

stay away from FRAM filters. they dont have a valve so the horror stories you hear are from the filter being plugged and the guy gets ZERO oil pressure, blowing his engine.

AMSOIL is one of the best for filters but they are expensive. Motorcraft makes a good filter as well as NAPAs higher lines. They also carry Purolators which are also great filters.

Might wanna check this out... very informative.

Buy 7 quarts of 5W20 or 5W30 and just stick w/ the Motorcraft of Puralator/PureOne filters. No need to spend $10 for a filter when these are just as good.

I know my car uses 6 quarts, no more, no less..I don't think 2v's are any different.....I would go with motorcraft filters.

Well, I used to work in the Parts and Service Dept at my local Ford Dealership and investigated this question quite heavily. 6 Quarts is all you need. Not 6 1/4 or 7. Motorcraft 820s is as good as they come. Just change it every 5k with your Syn oil and you will be fine. As far as the weight is concerned...5w-30 is ok too. Don't worry about the whole 5w-20 thing. That was done for CAFE regs with the US Gov.

People that use 6 quarts in their GT's are oil *****

5 is all that is needed. I'm switching to 5w-30 for a lil more protection.

PureOne filters are the best hands down price, filtration, and its blue

the ford manual that came with my car says 6 quarts so thats what I put in it. I was running strictly motorcraft 5-w20 and motorcraft filter, but the vortech manual says to only use synthetic 5-w30. So, ive been putting in Mobil 1 5-w30 and motorcraft filter ever since.

Those that are only putting in 5 quarts aren't draining all their old oil out or they are running it low on oil because the V8s hold 6 quarts. My 3.8L V6 takes 5 quarts and clearly a V8 larger.

The GT oil pan holds 6...

Before my motor came out, i ran 6 (5w-20) quarts and a fram filter for 46K miles on the stock engine with cams... never one problem in its lifetime.

Always run ford motorcraft semi-synthetic. My buddy put full synthetic in his motor and it blew it up.

No where did you come up with that...my manual says 5 qts and I do my own oil changes and I can tell you that 5 qts is more than enough for my stang...

Full synthetic will always be better than sem-synthetic. Your buddy must have done something to cause his engine to blow. By the way, I'd stay away from Fram since I hear a ton of people calling it the "orange can of death" since the filter media implodes very easily.

Well, all I know is you must not be getting it all out or you are not filling it up enough. A V8 holds 6 quarts, end of story. Did you ever think that the manual may be wrong?? I believe mine also says 5 quarts, but I know better and 6 quarts fills her up. It was the same on my 98 Cobra that I had a while back. And the V6 holds 5 quarts. Ain't no way the little V6 holds the same as the V8.

Well after searching around on a couple of forums, there seems to be some debate about this. I read where some say that the windsors take 5 and romeos take 6. I read that some dipsticks are marked differently. I read that some manuals say 5 while some say 6. The bottom line is, if the dipstick says its full, then it is full. Mine holds 6. For those of you who only put in 5 and the dipstick shows it being ok, then so be it. The extra oil can help if you do a lot of high rpm driving, when the pan could potentially run dry.

It just doesn't seem like there is a definitive answer, but just fill it up. Buy 6 quarts and if only takes 5, then you have some in case you need to top it off or just keep it till next time. God knows we are gonna go through some oil. You'll use it eventually.

You only really need 5 and ahalf quarts because whats in the system already makes up for the rest. If your engine was bone dry I can see where 6 quarts is needed.

Ive owned my 99GT since new bought it with 17 miles on the clicker, I have only used Mobil 1 synth 5w-30 (5qts) Its had a nitrous kit installed since "00" + (mods in sig.) and i have never even pulled a cam cover on it! and i do run it hard on the weekends.
I use to change the oil on it every 3k but i was pouring my money down the drain, Now i change it every 4-5k
I also own a 01 Roush that is S/C and it read overfull when i poured 6qts in it, i had to drain about 1/4th of a quart to correct it.
I havent confirmed this but i have herd that the 96-98s had bigger oil pans and used 6qts. Just as the old debate on catalytic converters they also had 6 cats vs 99 & up had 4 cats

All I know is, I put in 6 quarts each time and I am not above the full mark on my dipstick so like I said, go by the dipstick and you should be fine. If you only use 5 and yours says its good then fine. Mine says its good when I put in six, so end of story....

Well, that myth is false since I have an 03 and mine takes 6.25-6.5qt, depending on filter. As TangerineBoss says, it doesn't matter how much you put in, but whether your dipstick says it's full or not.

Just for the record, before going on my trip up to New Jersey for the past week, I changed the oil and I put in 6.5 quarts and it put it at the MAX line on the dipstick...

They should take 5 quarts. For you guys putting in 6+, I wonder if your dip stick is bent and coiled-up. Certainly, there could be a quart+ difference between the MIN and the MAX lines and is prolly accounting for the difference. I keep mine at the mid-point. Also, I find with my blower, the car takes a bit more oil.

My dipstick IS NOT coiled up or bent, and I have checked it with it cold and having sat overnight (before we left to come home from New Jersey) and th oil level was right up to the MAX mark. I have been reading about variations in the dipsticks, and that 96-98s and 01-04s take 6 (Romeos) and the Windsors (99-00)) took 5. Could be some slight deviations in the transition years, but reading over on the Corral, that pattern seems to hold. Anyway, I think we established to just go by your dipstick. I was just stating to back up my assertion that it does take 6. I'll let to oil drain out for about 10-15 mins (until it is just a slight drip from the pan and of course change the filter) and 6 or slightly more is just right for me.
