Default Motor ideas

Planning on getting a appointment. To talk over some plans on getting my motor built hopefully.

Let me tell you what i'm looking for and then go into the specifics.

1.) Thinking about doing the N/A thing but it costs a bit more. But thinking about a higher compression engine. Like step it up a little what compression ratio seems like a good idea.
2.) This will be my daily driver for awhile. So I dont want anything crazy and I think I can get a tune to run it safely on 87 octane but go wild on 93 octane.
3.) Sticking with the same heads but getting them ported and valve job.
4.) He asked me what hp range I wanted but I know thats going to depend on what is streetable and reliable. I dont want to destroy my gas milage.

But I know building a motor for nitrous or blower is cheaper so....... give me some ideas from you motor builders out there for both of these types keeping in mind the above.

Well if your gonna get it n/a get a compression ratio at 11:1 or a bit less then you can run pump gas still (93 octane) and make more power. Also Nitrous loves compression so if your gonna stay sprayed like i hope you are thats the path to go. ALso you wont be able ot run much more compression and still rock 87 so you might aswell get that thought out of your head now.

I dont know Nitrous is fun and all but I dont use it like I used to. You'll find out when you get some 4.10's and your running down the highway and you feel lke giving her a spray.

I have a 96 GT with full PI swap done and flat-top forged pistons. I run an ungodly 11:8-1 compression and 91 octane is the highest where I live and still get knock at times. Octane booster has taken a permanent residence in the back floor behind my seat. This is a fun motor, but can present all sorts of a fun new things to deal with in tuning and getting it "just right" to drive. Remember at 11:1 or more you need a minimum of one to two steps colder of a plug. Get with Randy for the part numbers. I have some of them myself if you need them. Good luck!

Well then figure it out because you dont want more compression if your gonna boost that motor. Also dont kid yourself into thinking you will keep it n/a there is no way that will last once you want more power and then your short block will suck for boost. So make up your mind and do it once and do it right.

he can still run boost on high compression. Just not too much boost. High compression and 4-5 pounds of boost would be the same with low compression and 6-7 pounds of boost. I say go high compression and tell them to gap the piston rings for nitrous (thats what they did with mine). here is whjat i think you should do.

1. forge everything (high compression) stroke it if possible (livernois)
2. change intake, bullit or logan motorsports intake
3. LT's
4. Cams (comp)
5. give us a video when done

Whats the point of running a high compression motor and limiting the amount of boost you can run to make more power, makes no sense to me at all.

just saying if he does go with high compression and goes with nitorus for awhile it doesnt mean that he CANT eventually go with a SC

Yeah...either go high compression n/a or low compression and add boost. I am with Spike on this.

I spent a lot of time on the phone last year with Al Papito and that was his advice too. Sure, you can make a high-comp motor work with boost, but why? You can do the same just by adding more boost.

You will always make more power with a built motor and boost then with an n/a setup. Figure on about 350 to 400 rwhp if you go n/a depending on what you decide to do. That is a TON of hp for a street car and it will sound insanely awesome. Also, you will have a lot less problems with an n/a car the with a blower.

But, if you want 500 - 600 rwhp, then you need boost to get there.

BTW, I highly recomend getting a BOSS 300 from Al. The guy is the best there is PERIOD when it comes to building motors. You can even send him your current motor if you can stand to be w/o the car for 5 - 6 weeks.

Al Papito lives 1 and a half hours away from me....lol...I have a guy local that has put a lot of mod motors together and I want to pick what goes into it. Maybe help and learn how on.

This is really a tough choice in what to go with. If I do high compression I can get away with maybe 50 shot. On that maybe make around 400+. Or I can do lower compression and maybe a freaking 150 shot...lol....and make 475-500.

Ok what about drivability for both motors? MPG? Reliability? Stil want to run 87 or mid grade when driving around town.

Thats incorrect sir, you like i said before nitrous and compression love each other. You can spray what the 4.6 can take which is like 250shot i belive is the most that can fill the holes in the motor. Just becaus eyou have higher compression doesnt limit nitrous at all, its actully the other way with that forgded block. If it wasnt forgded i wouldnt spray a poop load in there.

With a fogger nozzle i would stop at 150shot. If you want more a NOS direct kit or even the NX plate kit i hear people using that with 175-200shots.

Ah I see...See I learn something evey day. I still plan to go forged. Looks like i'm going to have to see what pieces i'm going to use for my motor to figure out how much it's going to be able to take.

Anybody on my other questions? MPG? Reliability? I dont want a oil eater.

you can forget about running 87 with a supercharged or high compression motor. either way you look at it, 93 is required.

You still need to pick either a low compression setup for boost later on, or a high compression street motor for nitrous and n/a power. Decided on that then move from there.

I get the same MPG with my setup as i did before. reliability is great, but starting up a cold cammed/forged engine can be a pain. But you live in florida so thats not a prob. with a high performance engine you definately have to watch your fluid levels more often but its worth it.

I wonder if that is because of your plugs

Right now were kinda thinking 10:1 compression which leaves some room for the nitrous may back off on the compression a bit more after we figure it out. Ported and re valved heads, havent decided on a cam yet. Forged pistons and rods brand I dont know yet I need to discuss prices. This isnt happening for a few more monthes. I need to build up some funds and find a beater for a week or 2.
