to better answer the question. your 4.6L enigine takes 6 quarts of 5w20 oil. the oil grade is right on the oil filler cap if you ever forget. now you can go convential, syn blend or full synthetic, its your choice. as for a filter, some filter #'s are fram: PH2 , motorcraft : FL-820S, I cant remeber the mobile 1 filter number off hand, but only get that filter if you plan on using full synthetic and want to go 7000+ mile between oil changes. if you are going to be part of the 3000-5000 mile club fram or motorcraft will do fine.

^^ ditto... cept I hate fram filters. WIX or Warner are good as well. Make sure you lube the filter gasket with a little CLEAN oil prior to installing it and make sure the old filter comes off with its gasket or you could develop a sudden severe leak.

If you're rich, K&N. Otherwise, the standard Motorcraft filter is more than enough.

k&n oil filters only have a 90% eff. rate, thats lower than a standard fram which has a 94% eff. rate, its right on the boxes and also a tough guard fram is 99% eff. and half the price of k&n. a k&n oil filter is for high flow(racing and such) applications not everday driving which is known as severe condition driving. I only know this because i was sent on a day long training session about the different types of oil and oil filters for my job.

I've been doing my own oil for sometime now, and i;ve always put in 6. I believe at one time the pre- PI 4.6 took 5, but im not sure about that.

never had any 4.6 stang take less than 5.5. I always use almost the full 6 (8 on my car... oil cooler) to get it to the full line.

i have been using royal purple 5w-20 and a K&N filter and my 02 gt takes 6.5 quarts.... my manual says like 5 something i think but it is way more then that... I absoutly love Royal Purple if you're interested there is a local shop (MN) that has an online store that sells royal purple 5w-20 fo ra little over 5 dollars a quart (about the same as mobil 1)

www.hitechmotorsport.com (then go to their online store)

My manual for my '03 says 6 quarts. Usually I do 6.5 to get it to the full mark.

Well i own a 99GT & 01 Roush and the manual says 5 quarts for both I even checked my fluid on my 01Roush last nite, havent moved it in 3 weeks and the mark was just barely below the full mark ?? The only thing i found different was the grade of oil changed in some cases like eng 5w-30 to 5w-20 and i believe the diff oil was different too 80w-90 to 80w-140?
