Just a couple of sites I came across. Keep in mind that 1993 was the first year of the SVT Cobra but it does appear that a Cobra did exist back then.

Read the second link. There was a 79 Cobra. But the only thing that distinguished it was a louver package and a fake hood scoop.

there was a 79 cobra

79 was the first year of the fox platform...

The Cobra model was carried over from the Mustang II. Like all 1979 Mustangs, it featured an egg-crate style grille. The lower body of the Cobra was painted black, a non-functional hood scoop gave the Cobra an aggressive look, and the rear-window louvers were painted the body color. The '79 Cobra was only available as a hatchback.

looks like its not a bad deal...

pull the motor... punch it out... stroke it... make nice power... paint the sucker

I also think the 1979 Mustang Cobra was a Canadian only car, we do show a 1980 Cobra as a 1st USA version

NE1 remember a 1982 Mustang "SS"

I see an emblem listed for it but I've never seen 1

There's one just down the street from me. I've been trying to get the owner to let me buy it for a few years. He seems content to let it sit on blocks. Burn.T

yes they are real. They weren't just a body kit as has been pointed out. The 351 was not offered. The 79 cobra came with a turbo 4 banger rated at an abysmal 131bhp. The special body kit was included as has been tradition. They also came with the much lamented TRX metric wheel/tire combo. Production continued until 1981 after which the turbo motor took a brief vacation.

OK I am sure I will get slammed for this...I found this forum in my search for a photo of my old car.

In 1988 my ex-boyfriend bought me a 1979 King Cobra. I know very little about cars so don't ask me a lot of questions. More or less, I learned most of what I knew about it from all the men who stopped me and asked if they could get a closer look at it. It turned heads.

From the photos I found of 1979 Mustangs...NONE of them have looked at all like mine did. Unfortunately I do not have any photos of it myself.

Mine looked a bit more like the 1978 photos I have seen. But yet still...I have yet to find one that is exact.

So if anyone could find any photos of any 1979 King Cobra (*my decal was peeling but I swear it was larger than the ones I have seen too) I certainly would appreciate it. If you have any questions to ask me further...feel free...but please don't tell me it didn't exsist. It did. I miss that car.

Be nice...I'm just a chick.

well the 1978 mustang was the previous generation

In 1979 ford came out with the foxbody platform mustand which wasn't replace until 1994

also there was no "King Cobra" in 79... however there was a cobra... its possible the previous owner slapped King Cobra badges/stickers on it

78 king cobra below

I certainly appreciate all the research. You guys are great.

But I know what I had...and neither of these is it. I have been on the internet for hours looking for it.

The body style is much closer to the '78 (and I am guessing the decal may have been an addition like you said)

It didn't have the T top and would it help (I wouldn't know where to look) if I told you it was a V-8 automatic?

I can also tell you it was green, and the striping was gold * though in my old age ...MAYBE it was white.

I hate to trouble you all with this...but it was my first car...and I was remenising

The best part about it was how it DROVE. Ooooooooooh I miss that car.

well... not all models came with the T-Tops... they were factory options...
