My driver's side foglight is dim as hell. I've done some searching and found a few things to try, but unfortunately, most of them I have already tried.

The problem cannot actually be the bulbs because I have transposed two brand-new sets between the driver's and passenger's sides and the light is only dim when installed in the driver's side housing. I have checked the ground connected to the hood, and that is fine; but I'm not sure which ground would affect the foglight directly. From what I can tell the actual lens itself is not damaged or dirty. It does look a tiny bit dirty and/or worn from use but there is no reason the light should be that dim.

I'm thinking that after I try all the simple things, the actual wiring to the foglight may be ruined, but I would like to try everything to no avail until then. Any ideas? I'll take some photos if need be.

 

Try wiggling the connector around and see if it changes. It probably has a loose wire inside the plug making a bad connection.

 

Are you referring to the actual bulb-to-wire connection?

 

Yes, and the connection between the wire and the terminal inside the plug that contacts the bulbs terminal. The terminals get spread a little too much sometimes or it may not be crimped tight enough to the wire.

 

hmm.. well adjust the foglight up higher... like my headlights appeared that way at first, but it was the angle of them,, maybe youve hit something.

 

I'll take a look at both options, but I actually think it may be the lens housing itself. I've never thought of this, but the front of the lens appears very dark and you can not see in to the reflective material inside like you can on the other headlight; it almost appears grey in color instead of clear. Perhaps for $80 or $90 I'll just replace both lenses so they'll be crystal clear...

In the meantime, I'll snap a quick photo for you guys and girls so you can see what I'm talking about and if you agree because I've tried pretty much everything else.

But in all seriousness it could very well be a bad foggy housing.

 

Good advertising :P and yeah do one of the following:
1. Check for fucked up wires
2. Make sure the housing or bulbs arent fucked up
3. Buy new ones

 

Well I have checked for "fucked up wires" but I wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything specific. There is a tiny chance that a wire could have frayed somewhere where I will not be able to reach, but I doubt that.

I'm almost positive that it is the housing because when I pull both bulbs out and shine them straight ahead they are equally as bright. Put the driver's side bulb in, and it's dim. Should I just go with the stock replacements from AM? I don't like those chrome ones without the lines even if they do give off more light.

 

Like the ones I have above? if you don't like those they have them smoked too. But they match well with the stock style dark headlights because the centers of the oem ones are chrome looking to.

 

Well I've done almost everything I can think of. I have a multimeter and I stuck the probes up in the contacts on both the passenger and driver's side and both read about 12.8V when the foglights were turned on. I know that the battery is a 12V battery but doesn't the alternator add volts to the system too? The reason why I ask is I want to know if the 12.8V value I'm getting is correct.

Regardless, I got almost exactly the same voltage values on both sides and when I hold the bulbs down facing the ground and not in the housing, they seem equally as bright. I've replaced bulbs, switched them, checked the ground, everything. If they are both getting the same power it must be the housing. My driver's side housing just does not disperse light so unless I can somehow clean the inside of it (if it is broken in the inside somehow that won't matter though) I'd like to know.

If not, I'm probably just going to buy some new smoked clear housings off AM or something of the like.

 

I am betting since electronically everything seems to have checked out, some condensation got inside the lense and fogged up the lense and thats why the light isnt dispersing as the other lens.

just buy some clear/smoked fog housings and be done with it
