My amp.

I have a rockford amp and 2 10" subs. I recently bought a new headunit and i installed everything the way it was with the old unit. Now when i hook my battery up it makes a popping noise and blows fuses in my amp. I can't figure out whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. any help would be great

Cheddarbob 05-17-2007 11:13 AM

just wondering how many watts ur runninh from the amp and what are the two subs watts along with the watts of the head unit?

It could be many things but here is common issues.
-two wires are crossed or touching
-wires are not connected correctly
-power wire is shorted(cut and making contact with metal)
-Subs are blown out or speaker wire shorted to metal

Make sure that there are no wires touching each other where they connect on the amp. Unplug everything off amp. Bring amp next to battery run two cables to amp Positive and negative, make sure you have fuse for positive and if it blows out again your amp is fried. If it doesnt you have a shorted wire going to amp and amp is good. Pull all the wires and inspect insulation for breaks.

Have you ever installed audio equipment before?

This was my first time installing subwoofers. I guess I'll just pull everything out and check it. I know it was fine because as I said it worked for almost a year. I have

575P4002 Rockford Fosgate Punch P4002 100W x 2 Car Amplifier

575P110S4 Rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 1 10" 4-ohm Component Subwoofer x 2

575CP4CKDS Rockford Fosgate CP4CKDS Amplifier Wiring Kit 4 gauge Power

even though it sucks i did laugh a little at the fact that my amp is in fact fried. pretty sure it was sparking inside somewhere becuase it was lighting up. its pretty much bran new.......

Return that shit and get a new one for free. where did you get it?

theponyfactor 05-17-2007 05:37 PM

crutchfield

i just sent them an email, so i guess we'll see

venom 05-17-2007 08:21 PM

It is normal for the amp to make a spark if the capacitors inside the amp are drained and as soon as you make the connection you may heard it but whats not normal is for fuse to blow. Double check all the terminals on the amp and make sure there is not a little strand of wire bridging two connections.

theponyfactor 05-17-2007 10:38 PM

Is it normal for it to smoke???

I emailed crutchfield and they said I have a 3 year warranty since I installed it with a rockford install kit. so i just need to call rf if i want to do something about it.

venom 05-18-2007 05:20 AM

Nope, not smoke LOL. Make sure to tell them that it just went up in smoke one day and not that you were installing it in another car.

theponyfactor 05-18-2007 06:05 AM

I got an email back late last night. They said since it was installed with the rf wiring kit, it has a 3 year warranty. so i just need to call rf now.

well you only have 200 watt amp your subs could not be getting the power they need

my rockford system has a p2 12" sub thats 500 or 550 watts and a 600 watt amp. you always want a little bit more power in an amp then your subs can handle
correct me if im wrong

your on the right track. you want the amp to push around, or a lil more then the rms of the speaker. say for instance on my system, my sony subs peak at 1100w, but rms at 600, i've got a sony 1200w amp, you wouldn't want to put a 1200w amp to each speaker because one day when you crank it up you could risk blowin' ur subs, and if they're any good it's a costly mistake. so just to be safe aim for right around the rms of the sub, lil over is alright just try to stay below the peak.
