Default Best way to Eliminate/Reduce Swirl Marks

Yea, read title.

Is there a certain wax that works best, something special that should be done?

I spray detail my car about once a week when weather is nice, wax about every 2 months.

If you really wanna get rid of the swirl marks there is only one way to do it...buy a Porter Cable and use a swirl remover (Like poorboys) followed by a wax. That's a lot of money so I suppose you could just use an OC brand (like meguiar's) swirl remover and do it by hand but it will be far less sufficient and will just be filling in the marks temporarily.

Check out autogeek.net there's a lot of good info over there

I have a Craftsman 10" waxer/buffer/polisher, so where can I get a swirl remover?

I personally use and love Poorboys....if you choose this use 2.5 with a Light cutting pad followed by 1 with a polishing pad. It will work wonders on ur paint. You can get it at autogeek.com

go to the autogeek website and order all their pads. claybar, polish, glaze, sealant, and some good wax should do it.

Mike, I use the same stuff. Wash, clay, #83, #80, and NXT Wax and your paint will be looking really good.

May have to update my process. I am in the middle of watching a video by Mike Phillips and the Corvette he is working on looked worse than my car. He is only doing the #80, then the NXT. Skips right over the #83. I will let you know.

Yes, definitely follow what these guys said. Buy a PC and get a good polish with the right pads, then use a good wax as your LSP. Another good site to check out is www.autopia.org They are the detailing gurus. Just ask a question and they'll help you out.

Yeah, but the #83 isn't going to hurt. The #80 isn't quite as agressive as the #83 I thought

That is correct, the #83 is more agressive. That's why I may just use the #80.
The Vette in the video has far more imperfections in the paint than my Stang. If he can make it "Show Car Perfect" with #80, then I should be able to do the same. Now, keep in mind, I have watched the whole DVD. He may come back in the next chapter and say the the #80 wasn't enough. Doubt it, but you never know. Needless to say, just ordered some more pads from ADS.

Here is a screen capture from the DVD I am watching. Left side is untouched, right side has been treated with Meguiars Scratch X, Meguiars #7 Show Car Glaze and NXT all by hand.

Yeah, especially if you use it with a Rotary.

I looked at that Scratch X. Can I use that instead of Meguiars #80 or#83? then after the Scratch X, wax it with NXT???

Also on that scratch X it said use by hand, can I just use my waxer/buffer?

The original Scratch X is designed to be used by hand only. HOWEVER, they have recently reformulated it to be used with a machine. Read the instructions on yours and it will let you know which product you have.
#83 is more aggressive than the Scratch X, not much, but a little bit. I would say #80 is not as aggressive as Scratch X but since it can be used by machine, some may get better results with it. I have all three. Scratch X is AMAZING on some deeper scratches if you use it properly. Using it properly is the key. I thought I needed #83, #80 then #21 on my car, but after viewing a recent video, I can skip the #83 and go right with the #80.
Hope this helps.

just be careful with buffing as you are actually removing some clearcoat to get those scratches out. You don't want to do it too often so take care to keep your car clean in the first place.

I feel my car is relatively good as far as scrathes and such, I think I'm just gonna go only with #80. Can I do this?? What if it doesnt work as planned and I want to use #83 or Scratch X, would I have to re use #80?
Of course all this would be followed by a good wax, prolly NXT (although never used it before).

My car is a Daily Driver, so I don't expect it to be perfect, but I plan on entering some car shows this summer, hoepfully in a Daily Driver category so I want to be looking sharp

Yes, you can go with the #80. You should be pleased with the results. The #80 is a polish, the #83 is a cleaner. I would not go #83 straight to NXT. You could, but I wouldn't. When I redo my car, I am gonna try the #80 first, if it is not agressive enough, I will do the #83. I feel the #80 for me will be fine.

So I've been looking around for Meguiars #80 at all my local auto stores and cant find it. I did find #9 tho, "swirl remover". On the bottle it was listed as a 3 on their scale of light to hard cutting. #80 was rated at four, so just one marking above. Can I just use #9, and maybe two layers on parts that need it if needed? The car is ok except for slight light swirls. Also wil be clay barred right before buffing. Again, all this will be finalized with Meguiars NXT wax and a Microfiber bonnet already purchased. Thanks guys!!

Took some pics of the condition of my car. Sun was out so you should be able to get a decent feel for the swirl markings on the car.

So should I start with foam bonnet and #80 or start with #83?
