Open Track Adventures

Just got back a few hours ago from Memphis. It was tons of fun. I am so tired and sore. My throat is very sore from yelling because my instructor was nearly deaf, plus my car is as loud as a freight train. I did pretty well. It rained the today and on my first session out I spun after the second 90 degree turn. I wasn't the only one either, you had to go SO slow it was nearly unbearable. I was hitting 135mph at the end of the stright when I pushed it all the way. I've got video of two sessions and you can see the speedometer pretty well. I will try to have those on Youtube soon.

Cayman S behind me.

First of a set of two 90 degree turns. I smashed that late apex!

First part of the straight, which is a dragstrip.

Passing the Lotus. The Porsche in front of me is an SCCA racing liscened guy, he didn't want to let anyone pass him but he was slow in the turns.

Another Cayman S (I think) that I pass on the straight IIRC.

In the rain, my instructor not paying attention.

More fun in the rain, I had to go so slow there on thoes 90s

whats up with all the blue tape, is it for added aerodynamics/ultimate awesome-ness

Shambles 09-14-2009 12:54 AM

The tape is so the car doesnt get damaged from debris.

I demand more pics of the Lotus.

INtZ 09-14-2009 01:02 AM

lol that makes more sense

engineman312 09-14-2009 03:35 AM

I just have some Sumitomo HTR Z III tires. They pretty much got ruined after two open track events now. I am thinking about getting Nitto NT-05 tires

How much does it cost you to go run the open track? We've got a track deal coming up this weekend at the Super Speedway and they wany $135/day.. That seems just insane to me.

PS. Nice pics!

For that event it cost $250 for the weekend, which is five, 20 minute sessions each day. $135 doesn't sound too bad to me, depends on how much track time you get.

BikerSk8rKid 09-14-2009 10:52 AM

Those are awesome pictures and looks like fun, besides when the rain comes.

The Lotus's that were there, are they the Elise Model?
I have a few people down here who have them and they're so slow, but awesome at the track, like amazing. They sound like shit as well.

Those two Lotus are the Exige model and the Red and black one an Exige S. I can easily pass the Blue Exige on the straight. This was the first time I've been on the track with the black Exige S and I guess he and I were running about the same lap times because I never passed him and he never passed me.

Deathdiesel 09-14-2009 05:44 PM

Looks crazy fun man, but i think id end up bien too rough on her.

How come there is a passenger with everyone? Safety, training or what?

Everyone except for the those in the Advanced group has an instructor that rides with them. I didn't really learn a whole lot from my instructor this time but it's always good to have an extra set of eyes in the car. That blue Lotus was one turn ahead of me when it spun and I didn't see it, he did, not that anthing would have happened anyway.

Do you pay extra for the instructors?

PS. Nice pics!

I will say that was the best $135 I spent when we took the Cobra and my Focus after the turbo was installed and tuned.

Me and my dad traded spots at lunch, when I accidentally went out while we weren't suppose to. Nobody said anything, but the papers did lol. So I was driving around with some H/C/I z06's and the Delk Turbo Fox....pretty fucking scary when a car from 100 yds away becomes right on top of you 10 seconds later lol.

You will LOVE it. Try to get an in-car video if you can. I'll post a link to mine here in a second.

badtib04 09-14-2009 09:31 PM

damn i wanna do that D: sweet pics!

Pilks 09-14-2009 09:40 PM

looks like an awesome time

BoostedMKIV 09-14-2009 09:59 PM

Nice...
Looks like did well...

That Cayman definitely needed a driver mod tho.
Those things are some of the best-handling track cars out there.

you must be either modded to the hilt, or just a badass driver.

either way...good job, dood.

No it's included in the price. After my next event I might get signed off for Solo (to drive without an instructor) but I will still have to pay the same price unless I become and instructor, they only pay $100 for the weekend.

Yeah, thats the way our Adcanced and Instructor groups are, the cars in those groups are SO fast. The advanced group is known for following super close and not waiting for point-by's and just about make it an actual race with the way they drive. I rode in a 911 cup car in the advanced group with an instructor driving and we were only feet away from cars in front of us while going 140mph and then right into a heavy braking zone. I got some video, they should be on youtube today.

It's probably a little bit of both. I've been doing autocross for years and open track is just a little more natural to me. Those old guys in thier porsches just don't push it like they could. Most of those Caymans, Boxsters, Loti, could easily be faster than me with the right driver behind the wheel.

08mustang_gt 09-15-2009 07:48 AM

Yea the bad thing is some of the cars out there I actually passed. The was a Cayman, a semi-stock 350Z, but his suspension sucked so I ate him up through the corners. The six-piston 14" rotors really helped too lol.

I can honestly say I hate moving to missouri. The closest track is in iowa, no one does autocross because down here it's all about gay ass dirt racing and fucking nascar. I will move back to Tennessee or Florida and build a complete race-built Cobra. Me and my dad have already decided this lol.

You need to look up the St. Louis Porsche Club. They have an open track event soon. A few of thier guys came down to ours this past weekend and was trying to get some of us to come up there. They had some crazy nice cars, new 911s on slicks and such. One of the guys was telling me about hte track they run on. A seven turn course with nice new surface and a big banked oval, sounded nice but I don't have the time or money.

mustangman95gt 09-15-2009 07:37 PM

nice action shots

mustangvsix 09-16-2009 10:47 AM

thats awesome man, I really want to do an open track event like that. Autox is great and lots of fun, but I really want to get out there and experience that full track feeling.

I feel the exact same way. With autocross, your cooped-up, no room to stretch the legs and show off what the Mustang (Cobra in your case) shines at. It's really bad at our Arkanasas autoX location. We have a super small 500'x500' (at most) lot that we use and lap times are usually 45 sec., with speeds never reaching top of second gear. I tend to overdrive consantly at autocross because the as soon as the car gets out of low end tq. and into top end power, it's time to slam the brakes and turn.
