wasnt the fiero the worst car ever built and subsequently discontinued pretty quickly?...motor heads round the block say it has a lawn mower engine...it was only good as a kit car...something for the guys to put a ferrari kit on and make a wish
|
I was in wisconsin dells last weekend and they had some fiero convention. I couldnt help but laugh at some of those shit-buckets.

The entire frame and structure is like one solid roll cage with flexible panels on top. The reason it is not ranked number one is the fact that it does not have air bags, since they didn't come into play on cars until later. yes, I will admit that some of the 4 cylinder engine models do sound like lawn mowers or sewing machines, but that 4 banger engine has been around for years and is very reliable and gets good gas mileage, which is probably the reason why you still see many 4 cyl and 6 cyl Fieros still on the road today. The V6's are very quick and a stock V6 has a nice exhaust tone to it as well. I have dual exhaust on a few of my 4 banger Fieros and they sound really nice too. If ANY car is taken care of properly it can be a very reliable car. The reason why some Fieros had problems (mostly in the first year) and why some people have this stigma about them is the fact that people would buy these cars thinking they were bullitt proof sports cars and then beat the crap out of them and never check the oil, etc. The reason it was discontinued was because in the mid 80's GM was going through a lot of turmoil. The Fiero going through the natural progression of upgrades and new models was becoming as quick as a Corvette at less than half the price. Pontiac was testing Fieros at the track with V8's in the mid engine bay against the latest vettes at the time and the Fieros were blowing the doors off the Vettes. So since GM couldn't have an upstart beating their prestige vette they used the turmoil at GM to get the Fiero canceled. The 88 Fieros had just gone through a major new upgarde with a new suspension and other features and was primed to have a high powered V6 like a 3800 installed when it was killed. All three of my kids own Fieros. My daughter was in a major accident a few years ago when a lady ran a red light and t-boned her in the drivers door and pushed her across the street into a traffic light pole in the passengers side. It totaled the Fiero and yet she walked away. The Fiero though being totaled by the insurance company actually was not that bad at all and my Dad had it back like new again in a few weeks and back on the road once again keeping my daughter in a reliable and very safe car. My oldest son slid on a bad icy road one time in his GT and slammed into a guard rail at 40 mph. Not getting into why he was on the slippery raods going 40 to begin with LOL he was uninjured and the car was easily repaired. Almost any other car in that situation would have been totaled and sent to the yard. So, go ahead and say what you want about the Fiero, bash it and insult it all you want (the more people think they are bad cars the lower they cost for those of us who know better) but the facts are what they are and my kids are living proof that these cars are for real and live up to that billing. :kekekegay: Granted the majority of the Fieros that you might run across on an average drive down your street may be a plain jane high mileage stock model, but the ones that go to a show like the Dells, Carlisle, POCI, etc are either low mileage show winning stock versions or highly modified beasts that can and have embarrassed many a car driver that assumed as you are that it all Fieros are merely shit buckets ;) |
I can appreciate any car (except the AMC 4WD Eagle, Pacer and Ford Maverick) and kudos on the Fiero(s), as well as the Mustang and the firebird.

Anyways I always wanted a nice GT when I was a teenager but never got one. I tried a few years ago to buy a Pace Car edition just like yours. It was a trade in at a dealer and one of their employees bought it out from under me. I remember when I was in tech school our teacher said that on the V6 models that it was impossible to change the rear 2 plugs without pulling the motor. Is this true? |

Probably arent much worse than my 91 firebird was with the 305. I had to get a couple of them underneath with a swivel extension. Good thing I'm pretty skinny. heheh...
Forgot to say earlier that you have some really nice Fieros. I'm really not into them much anymore but I can really appreciate a car that old that is that nice. Very cool 80's cars. When I was a kid my brother had an old (new then) Ford EXP. lol.. He always wished it was a Fiero. LOL! |

If not then I am curious to know what information your basing this fire comment on? Actually, based on production figures from 1984 to 1988 and semi current registration figures there are as many or more Fieros still running and on the road today as any other production car from the same time period. I guess that means that they didn't all burn up, blow up or get sucked up by aliens LOL |

I'm not saying that the Fiero didn't catch on fire, all I am saying is that making statements like "the Fiero had an engine fire and fires are the main killers of them" is helping to spread misinformation if it's not true. Just because your buddy, or your friends uncles second cousin said so doesn't make it true and fact.
If someone came along on a Fiero message board and said that they saw a crappy old Mustang with an engine fire which totaled the car and their buddy said that they heard all Mustangs have engine fire problems and so fires are the main killers of Mustangs, I am sure someone on the message board who knew more about them and maybe even owned a Mustang or two would certainly speak up and correct the misinformation. Car fires are nothing new to the auto industry, and GM and every other auto manufacturer have had issues with them since about day one. The Fiero had a few early on as does any car at some point (no car ever made has never had a few cases of engine fires) and with any car it is always a possibility. Ford has certainly had their problems with engine fires. For example: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/...often_late.htm Ford Motor Co., for example, denied for five years that its vehicles were prone to steering-column fires before finally launching the largest auto safety recall in history in 1996. By then, a number of motorists had died and many others had been injured in fires which allegedly resulted from faulty ignition switches in the steering columns of their Fords. Ford quietly conducted a limited recall, replacing the faulty switches in some 27,000 fleet vehicles while publicly denying that there was a problem. Public pressure mounted as lawsuits were filed. Ford eventually paid a $425,000 settlement to NHTSA for allegedly concealing information about the ignition-switch problems. But critics said it saved much more than that by reducing the number of vehicles it had to recall and repair. Even so, it wound up recalling eight million cars, trucks and vans. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/autom...tang_fire.html Flaming Fords Amy of Antioch TN (1/28/05): My 2000 Mustang (42k miles) was parked in the lot at work when I received an email from the front desk that there was smoke coming from the passenger side hood. I went down and there was a small flame that, even with two fire extinguishers, was incessant. Fire department came and car was taken to nearest Ford Dealership. Ford took no responsibility and even made me foot the bill for my rental when it took them over a month to produce one of the wiring harnesses. I have called them and consequently wrote a letter to state I would never buy one of their vehicles again. I traded my Mustang two days after getting it back from the dealership. Fire burned through two wiring harnesses, relay (source of the fire) had to be replaced also. Jakub of Evanston IL (12/15/04): I purchased a 2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1 in November 2003. In July 2004 I took the car into the Ford dealership (Highland Park Ford) with an idling problem. The car would idle to past redline and continue to do so no matter what I did, whether I was in gear, in neutral or with the clutch pedal depressed. As a result of this, the car would accelerate on its own while I was driving, etc. >On Dec 14, 2004. I was driving on the highway when I noticed some smoke coming from the engine. I pulled over and opened to hood to see what was going on. I saw smoke coming from the rear of the engine. I closed the hood and called the police/fire department. The car is totalled as the front half is close to being gone, as is the front of the interior. I called the Ford dealership I purchased the car from to inform them of this, and they bluntly said that things like this are not covered and it does not concern them. Tamara of Detroit: My 1988 Ford Mustang that caught fire after 7 months of ownership. I contacted Ford back then (in 1992) and they would not acknowledge responsibility. Approximately one month after the fire, Ford issued a recall for "faulty ignition switches" that were responsible for fires in many Ford vehicles of that make and year. I am extremely displeased with Ford vehicles and I will NEVER purchase one again nor recommend one. I am currently a first year medical student and upon graduation my intentions are to purchase a new vehicle. You can be assured that Ford Motor Company will not even be a consideration. |
We usually only keep insurance on the 4 cars we drive most of the time. If we want to take one of the other cars that is not covered at that moment, all we have to do is call or e-mail the insurance company and let them know which one we want to switch to and from the date and time of the call/e-mail that vehicle is now covered.
|
I think we should take all this negative attention off of the fiero and put it on a car more deserving.... The Yugo.
LOL... :kekekegay: I remember when I was a kid my neighbor bought one brand new or very close to brand new and it ran for a short time and sat in his driveway for years dead! I think I remember some art students making sculptures out of them a while back. I believe they said you could cut the bodies with scissors. hehe... |
