There's several steps in torquing the bottom end, i could list it but it would take up some space. Also swapping out the internals is easy but attention to detail is a must. example... will you get your motor bored out, atleast hone it before you install the new parts, check main bearings for oil clearance when the crank is in, you have to check it with plastigage. There's alot more steps, checking clearances several times, not hard but If you've never done this before, then i suggest having someone that know's to help, book on ford engines builds/rebuilds,maybe something on the internet, or have a professional do it. To build one and be proud of, start it up and a few minutes later it takes a crap, will piss you off more than anything.

I've made sure to have a master engine builder on hand for the assembly. There's no point in me trying to do everything solo even if I consider myself mostly competent. Hell I'm a computer geek not a mechanic, no sense in making things worse.

From what I understand, modular motors are kinda finiky about how they're assembled. If you don't get the tolerances to spec they just don't last. I'm going to be buying a new set of pistons too. I've decided to bore it 20 over so I can start with a totally fresh motor. On the upside, I've gotten some side work in the last few days that pays for my rods and bearings, and I've got a couple more days lined up that'll pay for new pistons and ARP fasteners so I'm in a pretty good mood.

!!!!GROUP PURCHASE OPPORTUNITY!!!!

I've arranged a group purchase of forged rotating kit parts for us. This group purchase requires a group of 5 or more of each item type (5 sets of rods gets the rod discount, 5 sets of pistons gets the piston discount, 2 sets of rods and 3 sets of pistons gets no discount) for the discount to apply.

Forged H-Beam Race Rods. 6.658" 5.4L w/ arp Cap screws. $265 a set of 8 These are good to about 650-700hp though they claim 800. You can be comfortable spinning 6500rpm in your 5.4 with these rods holding it together.

Forged Mahle Flat top Pistons with ring package. $447 a set of 8
Forged Mahle Dished Pistons with ring package. $495 a set of 8
Everyone knows about Mahle pistons. Stock in the Terminator cobras. They'll hold whatever power you can throw at them.

Please see the Group purchase ad under the Classified sales section to sign up . The vendor has expressed a desire not to get a million phone calls so I'm going to keep the name under wraps until I can get everyone signed up. Suffice it to say that they're a very very reputable mustang parts specialist in California that does thousands of orders a week.

dont put alot of faith in the mahle pistons....good pistons dont get me wrong, but that is the weak link in the 03-04 cobra's cause they have manley rods.
but they are definitly good to 500hp 650hp?

r3dn3ck 05-19-2006 03:32 PM

Agreed. The whole package is designed to be solid up to about 650hp or so. After that you should probably build another level up. But since most of us are going 5.4 2V I figured this was the optimum price/performance combo.

And for the haters... yes we all know of tales of 800hp terminators on stock bottom ends but we're not looking for what might be, we want what is certain. FWIW, 650hp in a mustang is absurdly over powered for a street car. I've driven dozens of 650-800hp stangs and they're fun for a minute. Then the reality of having to baby it sets in and they're less fun than a 450hp mustang.

Saleen S330 05-19-2006 06:09 PM

Nice deal!!! If that was before the heads and before i installed the motor, i would be all over that. yeah over so much HP and it's to much for the street and to much spinning the tires.

I put an exhaust video, in that section, it's short and the digital camera didn't do any justice for it.

customstang 05-19-2006 07:07 PM

How hard would it be to put a 5.4l 4v in a 2004 Mach 1 (stock 4.6l 4v)?

What all would need to be modified to make it work, and how much would it cost?

And whats the difference between a short block and a long block and what is my 4.6l?

r3dn3ck 05-20-2006 12:05 AM

argh... answered that question several times in this thread. Here goes again...

Not hard really. Mostly a bolt in proposition.

Exhaust, a little. Reichard 4v intake adapter plates, maybe extend a few wires. It will cost exactly as much as you let it. Minimum is about 1500 bucks all in.

Short block is a block w/ rotating assembly. A long block adds the heads. Your 4.6 is a complete engine more than likely. If it's only a short block then it's missing the top half. If it's just a long block then it's missing everything but the short block and heads.

It's just the block and it's contents that's changing. The top half really stays pretty much the same as it always was. Your Mach 1 shaker hood scoop will almost certainly not work and you'll probably have to fix the scoop semi-permanently to the hood and remove all the other components, or get a GT or Cobra R hood. You might even be able to get a semi-custom hood. Check with Boss330. He's done more with 4V motors than us. We're mostly 2v guys.

97_Cobra_Droptop 05-20-2006 07:39 AM

I'm not going to say I know for sure, but according to the Reichard Racing site, the adaptor plates only add 1" in height to your intake, and the Mach 1 hood already has a raise in it. I know the shaker can sit on top of a Kenne Bell/Whipple twin screw, with the stock hood. You could probably fit the shaker on top of your intake, but it wont be worth trying to rig it functional, not like it does much of anything to begin with. Your better off getting a cold air intake and letting the shaker sit there. Has anyone actually figured out how much higher everything sits with a 5.4? And wasn't r3dn3ck saying something about measurements for an aftermarket K member to drop it about an inch, if possible? I know Saleen threw in a tubular K member, sounds like more for weight reduction though. Didn't you say something about cutting under the hood for clearance, but not through? The raised center in the Mach 1 may accomodate the difference, just sit a bit tighter on the shaker seal. But like I said, not for sure.

Saleen S330 05-20-2006 07:45 AM

2 Attachment(s)
The underside of my hood is alittle different from the 99 and up stangs, so my hole is bigger, but yeah not through the hood. The adapters do add an inch. A cowl or if you can get a k member that lowers it an inch, also i know the 2000 Cobra R's had lowered motor mounts, to sit the engine lower in the car. The 5.4 intake will help alot, then no more adapter plates.

97_Cobra_Droptop 05-20-2006 07:54 AM

Oh snap! Where'd you get the one piece lights?

Saleen S330 05-20-2006 08:16 AM

I bought them from UPR a couple of months ago, but took them off and sold them. some people like them, some don't.

r3dn3ck 05-20-2006 08:41 AM

suffice it to say that the 4v 5.4 will fit with some minor fuss and adapting. If you want the power, then just step up and make it work. That's the only way to get it done.

myillwillinc 05-22-2006 11:00 AM

i scanned thru the 16 pages on this thread and i wish i had this many interested people to bounce ideas off of when i did mine 2 years ago. but if anyone wants to ask questions, i'll be happy to offer everything i know about doing mine. email me at myillwillinc@aol.com

r3dn3ck 05-22-2006 11:19 AM

hey myillwillinc, welcome to the fray. Glad to see you found us. I've got a couple quickies for you if you don't mind:

Would you consider indulging us with some details of how your swap went, what kind of results you got and any longer term issues you found? Dyno results? Tuning experiences? etc...

Also, I'd be right interested in how you solved your copy of the intake issue... Did you fab your own plates or what? Cmon cmon... enquiring minds want to know. An last but certainly not least... pics man! post pics. I can host them for you if you need.

myillwillinc 05-22-2006 12:45 PM

just need a cowl hood to fit the 2v and the 4v with certain adapters

chip6990 05-22-2006 12:53 PM

we need pix of yours myillinc

myillwillinc 05-22-2006 12:54 PM

i'll post them up tonite. my motor broke a rod and ventelated the block last week so i'm building a all forged one. i'll post what i have so far tho...

did you ever dyno? what was the combo b4 it blew any times?

r3dn3ck 05-22-2006 02:20 PM

myillwillnc, in case you don't see my other post on the corral, yes you can make your purchase early. I called them and they'll let you in early due to you actually needing the rods right now.

Send me an email to cburnss at gmail dot com and I'll send you the number and details. You're welcome.

I just got off the phone with my machine shop. Looks like they're going to hit me for 250 to bore & hone, hot tank and polish the crank journals. I'll be dropping my block off in a few days hopefully.

Looks like my "by summer" plan is shot but I've also decided to go a few steps further and really do a top shelf job. New ETA for up and running is end of fall which means no SSCC for me this year.

For those of you with 5.4's in or on the way in, I'd like to see about getting us all together in the middle of the country next year for a big event... see if we can get some magazine coverage or something. I'd like to have at least 10 cars there but we'll see. What do you all think of a road trip to Omaha, NE next spring? I'm sure it'll be a hoot.

korea is worse than NE!!!!!!!

but i know why you have to go....and again....soldier on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:punk:

97_Cobra_Droptop 05-23-2006 06:20 AM

Korea again? Your starting to sound like one of my old NCOs, who is now in Korea again....again!

I'm still tossing a 5.4 around in my head. I don't know that I want it for my convert., I'm thinking a little mild with that then a GT buildup that would definately benefit from the added torque. If you get something started, I'd be there if I had a 5.4 for support.

r3dn3ck 05-23-2006 07:22 AM

it'll be hard for anyone to commit right now but at least the bug is in your ears. As for holding it in NE, it's the geographic center of the country. I figured it was at least in the middle and there's unending amounts of prarie for lining em' up and running em. I'm down with Kentucky though... I have reason to go there. A buddy of mine has been bugging me to do a road trip back to his home town (Covington). Or, we can all go to Utah and check out Arches National Park. Or how about Vegas Baby. With a show of custom Mustangs we can probably get a little cooperation from the casino's.
