Just Curious If The 5.4 Engine Fits In Newer Model Gt's And If So Why Don't More People Build Them Up And Drop One In?

yup, not huge gains from stroking our motors, just a real cool factor moreso than a real power adder.. Think you need a taller hood though depending on the intake.

i think that the 00 cobra r has the 5.4. it's a tall motor, that's why it has a different hood on it.

It has totaly different intake setup. the truck 5.4 will bolt in. you will need 5 1/2 or 6" cowl hood to clear the truck intake. It will make *** loads of tourqe.

yeah you can drop one in and yes people have done it..mm&ff actually did this swap...because the guy blew his stock 02 Gt motor with a nice juicing ( 250 shot) so they ran it on the dyno it put down something liek 220 hp and soem crazy thing like 300 torque with just a conical filter..they tuned it and came out with 230 hp and 320 torque....nice number for being totally stock. ccasion1

The motor had probe flattops,Manley Rods, fully ported heads and custom ground Nitrous cams.....FAR from stock. 1st pull was 241/302. Final numbers after tuning were 299/350. It would make a bit more with N/A cams. And yes..the deck height of the 5.4 is quite a bit taller than a 4.6....so hood clearance is a major issue.

You have to see how much power you want and see whats the best way to do it. In my case If I would of added a SC I would gained a punny 75hp so I went with an engine swap and I will gain around 100hp and Ihave room for a SC later on.

Not really. Running, low mile 5.4's go for around $1200-$1500 around here. Factor in $200-$300 for intake adapters, or make your own and maybe 300-400 for a tune. Thats about $2200 on the high side, minus what you can get for a stock 4.6. Alot of people have claimed to do this swap for under $1500. Everything from the 4.6 bolts up, including the inake (with spacers) and you dont need a new hood. I havent seen one yet, but a 5.4 with ported heads, cams, a short runner intake and long tubes would be a hell of a street motor..

that one article were they put the 5.4 in that gt, umm they kept the truck intake and it still fit with stock hood..they just had to notch it a bit.. and well it was def. stock when they put it in and dynoed but ... then they did make alterations later on...

From page 140 of MM&FF Sept 2003 ----and I quote "A guy at work gave me the 5.4 and I had it sitting around for awhile. I TOOK IT APART and knew I wanted to build something different." ----- " I rebuilt the engine using probe flattops...." This is a quote from Joe Gullet.----- So no, it WASN'T stock when they put it in. Guess I'm making it up.

You might have two articles confused. In MM&FF Gullet put in the rebuilt 5.4 with cams, ported heads and exhaust and the truck intake. It was also supposed to get a nitrous kit, this was the only article I saw in MM&FF.

5.0& SuperFords installed a stock 5.4, then in a few seperate articles went back and installed different mods, a chip, exhaust, short runner intake, pulleys and then later on cams.

I Probably date myself a little but us older guys came from a school with the rule that there is no replacement for dispacement. I had the privelage of growing up and owning several large cubic inch muscle car's such as 440 6 pak cuda,383 magnum charger,454 stingray and many other's that I wish I had still owned. I like to keep cars n/a for the sleeper effect when the hood is raised and the money savings and reliability. I face a problem many of the rest of you do,my best friends wife can kick my cars butt badly with her STOCK 2002 Trans-Am. I know I'm running a auto and a convert, but my car is only 20 lbs heavier and mine has lower gears and some bolt on's. We took each to the strip and I ran 14.4 at 95 mph vs 13.5 at 105 mph (and the t/a had traction issues that I didn't) We simply have a huge torque and horsepower disadvantage, even worse now with the 05 6.0 litre GTO! Some day I may build a 2000 or newer 5.4 block, bore it 20 over and bump compression up to 9.5 or slightly higher and port heads, install cams and drop it in the stang and it would look stock to most.

good luck cause ,a high horsepower n/a modular motor is gonna cost u... it would be awsome if u got the money and ambition to do it... and i'd love to hear about a stang with a really built 5.4 or w/e.. cause honestly i 'm getting tired of every other stang owner braggin about their new blower... i know the term still exists, but slightly changed.. there is a replacement for dispalcement it's called technology... why do u think a dohc 4.6 will own a 5.0 stock for stock??? smaller motor..

Sorry not trying to argue either...just making a point about the MM&FF article is all. As for a fast Mustang with a built 5.4 go to www.boss330racing.com. Al Pappitto (hell of a nice guy) runs 10.20's with a 520rwhp N/A 5.4. He also built Bob Cosby's motor (4.6DOHC that made 357rwhp N/A) that dominated NMRA Factory Stock class in 04( car has since been sold).

I'm not interested in building a dohc motor for a few reasons 1.doesnt look like stock 01 Gt engine 2. Much greater costs involved in buying the engine to build vs 5.4 2v and the extra costs of camshafts, fuel pumps and computer upgrades and other fitment issues.I do realize the dohc motors both 4.6 and 5.4 litre breath better and can produce more power. I was just thinking though when it comes time to overhaul or replace my 4.6 that I would build a 2v5.4 instead of the 4.6. I believe it would be cheaper and more reliable than stroking the 4.6 and would still have more cubes than the 4.6 strokers out there now. Not trying to provoke any arguments but the 4.6 just lacks the torque of the old 5.0 and the newer 5.4 litre engines and is more noticeable in the automatics than the 5speed cars. I want to stay n/a

The SOHC 4.6 also puts out more than a stock 5.0 Cobra, but that is roughly 14 years old. The 4.6L 2 valve reminds me of Fords SOHC 427 from the 60's, absolutely marvelous. I'm a N/A guy, I want to hear my baby screaming not whining.. Forced Induction is not technically a replacement for displacement, it's just a power adder.. like if you get some Nitrous. If you disagree, than Ported Heads and Intake would be considered a replacement for displacement. Oh, about the 5.4 vs. the 4.6... She says bigger is better.

a newer 5.4 out of a navigator would be a nice replacement if you could purchase it resonable. what would a person use for a computer and wiring harness if you went that route? sounds like a lot of work to do that conversion compared to the 2v expedition engine. I do realize theres 40 more hp with the 4v navigator.

Suprisingly, a GT wiring harness and computer can be used to swap in a 5.4 4V. Some modifications and a tune are required, I'll post a link of the nessecary wiring mods. Basically you need to length the wires for the coils and a few sensors.

YES THEY DO There was an issue of www.musclemustangandfastfords.com where they put a 5.4 liter N/A motor in a 99-04 mustang but yes you do need a new hood becuase the 5.4 has a different intake setup. They did get some pretty damn impressive numbers. Not to mention the extra cubes get that pony off the line quicker. MUHAHAHA the F-Bodies don't stand a chance then you throw a turbo or blower and.....well you know the end to that story.

5.4L motors do fit in the 94-04 Bodies...and will even fit fox bodies with a little modification.

This is one of a few options when going with greater displacement on these Modular motors. A stroker is almost not even an option, as it's scary to see how far the piston comes out of the bottom of the bore. A Big Bore motor is a viable option, however it reduces mating surface area between the cylinder heads and block...and blown head gaskets can become common especially under boosted applications. A Big Bore will make more power than a stroker though.

A 5.4L provides significant displacement increase, and you can go Big Bore on these motors as well. A Stroker on a 5.4L is not possible (read: not smart) though, as the piston speeds would become ridiculous approaching 6,000+rpms.
