nitrous tune

nitrous tune
How long should a car be allowed to drive when a nitrous tune is in use, with the timing retarted for about a 100 shot? Should I only use the nitrous tune at the track, or is it ok to use the car in this mode for regular use for a little while? I understand that the best way would be to use a chip with more than one tune so you can have a specific tune for nitrous, but when you switch tunes at a stoplight, does the car have to be restarted? I plan on using the venom 1000 kit and the sct chip on my 03 GT. I found a pretty good deal on a diablosport tuner, but I think it would be worthless for this set up. The only thing I like about a tuner, is it is easier to return back to stock, but I guess when your running spray, the warranty is pretty much worthless at this point. I just want to make sure I make the right decision with my mods by choosing them carefully...

Sure your warrenty is gonna be toast, but obviously the car is important to you and you have a lot invested, right? As such, I would be conservative. IMO, you are going with the right kit and seem to be doing the right things. This si my advise to you:
1 - Retard your timing one degree.
2 - Go with colder plugs...one step colder.
3 - Don't use the largest nozzle. You get for in your kit. Use the larger nozzle only after getting a larger fuel pump and/or injectors. (this is not necessary, just being VERY conservative for you).
Now, to the chip questions.
1 - No, the car does nto have to be restarted. UNLESS, your nitrous tune has a LOT of changes. With my car, I have my traction control turned-off for the nitrous tune and the car stalls when switching in and out of nitrous tune because of that. In my case, I have to re-start the car usually.
2 - Driving the car w/o spryaing with timing retarded is completly fine. No worries at all. If anything, it may be better, but, you will loose a little power. Say, perhaps 5 - 10 hp.
Hope this helps.

That is good advice. I have the one step colder plugs you suggested and will install them in due time when I get the venom kit. I will start with a smaller nozzle first as well. I think that is really convenient that the user can just switch between tunes with the chip. Maybe, I will leave the traction control on and manually turn it off when the nitrous tune is used. Would that work? What was your experience with the sct tuner? and what made you want to switch to the chip? I used to own a predator, but when I asked diablosport for recommended settings they informed me that I would need a custom tune because my car was "heavily modified." That's when I just installed the stock tune back in and sold the tuner.

If you forget to turn-off the traction control while spraying, you could ruin a motor in seconds! What happens when the traction control kicks in is that the ECU turns off spark and fuel monentarily. On a typical dry system, you will run extremly lean when this happens, but might survive due to the lack of spark anyway. On a wet system, you could cause fuel to puddle and have an explosion blowing the intake off the motor.
Now, with the Venom system, you have little to worry about. Why? Because as soon as spark get retarded and/or signal is dropped to the fuel injectors, the Venom shuts down the nitrous right away.
Despite this fact, I still have mu nitrous tune programmed to turn off my traction control. Better safe then sorry.
I have sprayed and forget to turn it off about a half a dozen times! The Venom always stopped spraying...I **** my pants each time it happened, but always ended up fine.
I went to a chip for the convenience of changing tunes. No other reason.

Holy**** that is scary! Your right better safe than sorry. Well, I finally made up my mind. I placed an order for the X Calibrator 2. I made sure I added a nitrous tune also. I felt that it would be easier for me to get a dyno tune, later when I add more mods... again thanks for the info.

Just be sure you specifiy what you want done with the nitrous tune.
I would recomend:
1 - Retard the timing 1 or 2 degrees
2 - Ask the tuner to either leave your fuel trims stock or richen it is a tad.
3 - Turn off the traction control
