Ok..what benefit does a mustang get with aftermarket Cams? like Comp Cams Or VT Cams?

 

An engine with aftermarket cams will be able to flow more air into and out of the engine.Since fuel is carried into the engine with the air,you get more power.This is true up to a certain point,a set of cams can only give benefits up to the flow potential of the rest of the engine.With a free flowing exhaust,intake,and ported heads,the higher lift longer duration cams are going allow even more air into the engine.On an engine with a stock intake,exhaust,and heads,a high lift long duration cam will cause the car to "just not run right" and can even give less than stock power.So when choosing a cam set,think about what you are going to do later on,or get the cams after you do the other mods.

 

I agree :iamwithst , everything mod must agree with each other for the best performance. Example, blower cams without a blower, cams without a free flow exhaust. Everything you add must compliment the other, cams will really wake up the mod motor if you get everything else to go with them and they also sound WICKED. :tongue1:

Great mod, but expensive with install. Also a good tune should really be done, which adds to the expense. There are a fer horror stories too from blown motors after a cam swap with a bad install. Very time consuming swap.

Cams, install, and a tune could be $1500 no problem.

With stage 1 cams, you might be able to get away w/o a dyno tune and use a mail orde tune.

 

cams are not really hard to install. A GT 2valve car, can have the cams installed in around 2 and 1/2 hours without taking the timing chaines off. Just lift valve covers and swap them out. not to bad really and a tune is gonna be needed if you want it to idle worth a damn. I plan to get either comp ex268 or comp 270's.

So figure 500 for cams and 375 for a tune. and your good to go. of course you can save money by finding used cams and getting a used chip and having it reburned to save some money. Poor college boys like me will be doing this lol.

Spike, have you installed them? I can't find a shop that will do them for less than $700 and have not located anyone locally to do the work anyway. If you can do the job that quickly, you should start selling your services.

I did find one guy who said he would do them out of his garage for $300, but he had no references for any other mod cam work and is away at college most of the time.

 

Like i said its not to hard really. they have the NEW AFM (anderson ford motorsports) cam tool, this lets you install cams into 2valve 4.6 motors without taking the front of the motor apart to do it. This saves an assload of time for the cam install. there are some direction i will go find to show you. a good backyard mechnic like myself or many of you on here are more than capiblie of doing it. and like i said it is around 2 hours if your huffing along for must of us more like 3 hours maybe a tad more. and i have done cams in other vehicals not a modular yet. but i think this is going ot be just as simple as a pushrod.
