odd noise

Default odd noise

my car is a 99 gt I finished replacing my headgaskets today finally. started my car..it ran rough for a few seconds then smoothed out for the most part but then began making a funny noise on the passenger side of the motor. to explain the noise most accuratly it sounds like a nut got left loose inside the valve cover and the cam was flinging it around- im sure you can get the idea of what that would sound like. however im pretty damn positive nothing got dropped in their. IM wondering if maybe i put the timing chain on like one tooth off or somthing? would the timing being off make that type of noiise? also does anyone know what the timing is on these cars.. i know how to check timing on an older distributer set up car but is their a way to check it on my car?

Dont run the engine anymore. Pull the valve cover off of the pass. side and make sure that no "rocker arms" popped off the valve while you were putting it back together.

The timing is pretty much set though the ECM and cant be checked like an older distriutor setup and timing light. You may have the pass. chain off a tooth, I do not know for sure if one tooth off would cause interference issures on that side but I could see how it could. There should be 30 links between dots on both chains.

I hate to be a smart *** but it sounds like youre going to get somemore "underhood" time. Sorry and good luck.

yea i know the worst part is I know i marked the chains and cam gear/tooth correctly and they are exactly where they go what im thinking is that the chain may have slipped on the crank end of things.

Is it a constant noise that changes with rpms? if so that could be the valves hitting the pistons because they were put on wrong. Which would be terrible.

I diddnt take the cams off to do my head gaskets i just marked the timing chain and cam gear then removed the timing chain tensioners took the timing chains off the cam gears but left them on the crank and just tied them to each fender well basically so they wouldnt flop around on the ground- then took the ten bolts out of each head and took the head fully assembled with cam and all off the car and reinstalled the same way-
i really diddnt rev the car at all i just started it and let it run for a few minutes it diddnt really start right away but once it idled down i noticed it
