Default Gears in rain and snow

I know theres a million threads about what gears to get but i looked everywhere and couldn't find the answer I wanted. Im getting gears in a month or so and choosing between 410s and 373s. Id much rather have 410s but my question was whether 410s would still be able to go threw rain fairly easily without the back end slipping out because of it spinning the wheels more with a taller gear? Also likewise for a small to minute amount of snow. Trust me the last time I tried to drive my car in a inch of snow up a hill didn't turn out so well. I got stuck half way up and the only way I got up was to switch the TC off and spin my tires the whole way up. F**k'n PA hills lol

The biggest thing is, you have to learn to finesse the gears and when to use common sense. Obviously, it wouldn't be smart to stomp the pedal of a V8 rear wheel drive car with 4.10's in the rain. Basically, they will be fine in the rain as long as you keep your foot out of it and take it easy.

I don't know about the snow. I live in Florida.

Edit: And having a good set of tires will help with the rain, too.

+1 on the tires. Drag radials are a no no, especially for the snow, so id go with all weather tires and just be careful. Or keep 2 sets of tires...a 'fun' set and a weather set.

remember to always be smart while driving in extreme weather. i drove my 3.73s in the snow, and u just had to be careful. also, i usually had to start in 2nd gear to avoid spinning.

In some cases, it may be better since you don't need to give the car gas but instead work the clutch. But as said, even w/ stock gears, finesse and 2nd gears starts are smart for snow driving anyway.

if you dont drive stupid the car will be fine in any kind of weather conditions.

4.10's arent some kind of magical gear that will make your car this insanely most impossible thing to drive on the road...sure there is a little bit more throttle response but nothing thats gonna get the car squirelly at the blip of the peddle.

I don't think 4.10's would be alot of fun in the snow.

any rear wheel drive in the snow performs like ****...especially with a wide *** tire that gets caked full of snow!

Ive pretty much decided on 4.10s but not 100% sure yet. Im saving up nw and will be buying them and getting the SCT tuner with a 93 octane tune sometime before Ford nationals in Carlise, PA in early june

yes sir...look them up. They might be a compromise instead of going one extreme or the other.

Interesting...ill have to consider those when the time comes to buy them.
Off topic but how much of a difference will the 93 octane tune be performance wise than 87?

if you use name brand gas, its a big difference. the car feels stronger and i did not sacrifice anything noticable in regards to milage.

You'll get a few more hp, not a huge difference but you should be able to tell a little.

Exactly!!!! I drive my car year round. I have two sets of tires. BFG KDWII's for the summer and Blizzak snow tires for the winter. I drove my car this winter with 4.10's just like I did every other winter with the 3.27's. The car will not drive any differently. The only difference is when you floor it, and that you will have to shift sooner. Never had to do the second gear thing, always started out in first. If you floor it in the rain the car will not go anywhere, it will just spin the tires. Just don't floor it going in or coming out of a turn when it's wet. 4.10's are not as big of a deal as everyone thinks they are. The performance you get is also not as spectacular as everyone makes it seem. Yes the car will pull harder, but not by as much as you are expecting.

Not much. All you're doing is adding a few more degrees of timing. You may feel like it revs faster. I thought that maybe my car reved quicker when I got a 93 octane mail order tune, but I wasn't exaclty sure. It might have just been in my head because it was a new mod on the car. Other than adding cams, a power adder, or nitrous, you will get the most performance out of gears and longtube headers, and then a dyno tune.

I have 3.73's in my '98 GT. Drive it year round. Rain, sun or snow...drive through it all.

I have V6 wheels with studded winter tires, though most studs are gone. It goes through snow quite well, but forget any kind of medium to steep hills from a stop or near stop. 99% of the time, I was fine. Only when we got 14 inches of snow did I have any problems and once things were plowed and salted, I was fine.

For Summer, I run 275/50-15 BFG DR's. In the rain they are ok, I drive easy in the rain. Rest of the time I drive like I always do.

Your ability to have more than on or off throttle control is the key. No matter what season it is.

I am quite happy with the everyday operation of the 3.73 gears. 4.10's would be fine too. I may in fact go to 4.10's or 4.30's if I start running my car at the drag strip seriously again. But first I have to make a serious run with the 3.73's to see how they perform.

I was on the fence deciding between 3.73 and 4.10's....so I got 3.90's. Mine's a manual though. Not really a big deal. If I could do over, I'd go with 4.10's.

I don't drive in snow, but I did get caught in an early storm once and my factory gears(with wide tires) was bad! I could barely get up my driveway. I think its more the wide tires and rear wheel drive than the actual gear ratio. Maybe get some good snow tires?
