torque converter stall speed
for quite a while ive been thinking of getting a new converter inside my tranny and i have talked to some people at percision industries about their stallion converter but its a little pricey and they recommended a 3200 stall. and the guy who installed my gears said 3200 is too high for everyday street driving. he also said something about raisng stall electroniclly?? i just want to know what converter and stall speed is good for me. since i have an auto you know i'm a straight line driver

I have a PI converter in my 02. It's a 3,500 stall speed and it is my daily driver. I know several guys running a 3,800 on the street with no drivability issues. You will not get the same level of performance from a factory conveter as the PI.
I went from 13.712 in the quarter mile to 12.89 by adding 4.30 gears and the converter. I bought my converter used, it had been in the original owners car for 8 mos. I paid 400.00 for it. They are around 720.00 new. |
A 10" converter is good for the street. Just make sure that you have a good tranny cooler.

If your planning on continually upgrading your motor then I would get one thats fairly high. I use a PI3800. Just because a converter is rated to stall at say 3800 doesn't mean it will. If I have a 200rwhp car is would be lucky to flash to 3000rpm...on the other hand that same converter with a 300rwhp car could flash all the way into the 4's...more power equals higher stalls. For a PA set-up you need a triple disc . If your commanding your converter to lock-up at WOT your clutch is going to take a beating (on the single disc).
BTW my car doesn't see much street use...but I would have NO reservations driving it everyday....its just a little loud. Make sure you get a tranny cooler....easy install $50 will get you a 24,000GVW one...I'll bet you can pick on up on this site even  Adam |
