I need help with my setup
hey guys...i just need some input here on how i should do my setup. Okay right now i have 2.25 inch flowmaster 40 series on my 97 gt. In the near future I want to do headers and a midpipe. What kind of headers should i go for and what kind of midpipe? Keep in mind i only have the mufflers on. Who makes an x pipe that would fit 2.25 inch mufflers? I would really appreciate it if you could even post some sites that sell what i'm looking for...thanks

no one makes a 2.25 x-pipe or h-pipe. you should get long tube headers for the most power. and the mid pipe is a personaly choice there isnt a big difference in power gain over an x or h or the prochamer. Me i like the h-pipe deep nasty sound.

if you're going to use a chambered exhaust then you shouldnt use an x-pipe, it will sound very raspy. use an H or get a straight through exhaust with an x-pipe
just wanted to add that i have flowmasters with an x-pipe even though i say not to do your exhaust like that. but i have some other additions that make it sound better and not so raspy.

thanks for the input everybody...from reading what you guys wrote i think that i'm going to get a set of lt headers (not sure what kind yet). I'm gonna forget about the midpipe and just do the lt headers. Considering that i already have flowmaster mufflers...what do you think would sound better, slp or hooker headers? thanks

how are MAC l/t headers? i found a pair that look pretty nice and i know that mac is a pretty respected company. If i were to buy these headers...would i be able to replace my stock ones with these, and keep my stock midpipes(because i have mufflers now)?

This is just my opinion.. but I don't care much for MAC. I know there for awhile their LT headers weren't welded very well and had slag left in them, that was sucked up by the EGR valve and then got into the engine and got embedded into engine walls and stuff like that (they said they only found cases of this on 4v engines though). Tons of people run MAC LTs though so if you wanna go that route you should be fine. I just know that when I bought my LTs I wasn't gonna let money hold me back so I went for the SLP Creamic LTs and I've loved em.

if i could save up around 700 something dollars then id think about it...lol but i really just want a set of l/t headers so i might go with mac. Would i be able to replace these with my stock headers and connect them to my stock midpipe or would that not fit?

what if i was to get midlength headers?? then would i be able to install them directly to my stock midpipes? The reason im not wanting to change my midpipe is because just a couple of days ago i got 2 1/4 inch flowmaster 40series mufflers welded on. And it would be a waste of money if i was to change my whole midpipe now

imo there isnt enough gains from headers for it to be worth the money unless you have alot of other work done. i picked up my x-pipe for $80 new so it was definitely worth the money to me. i found some shorties for $250 so ill get those but theres no way i would spend $700+ on headers.

I think you are confused. your flowmasters aren't welded to the midpipe. They're welded into the stock catback. The midpipe connects the headers to the catback.

So, I've spent a bit, but not much.
I picked up 5 rwhp on the dyno going back to my stock H once I put the blower on...

yeah im running stock headers with a upr x and flowmaster catback. like i said headers are expensive and not worth the money imo unless you have a lot of other work done. look into a pi swap if you havent done that already. if you want it to sound good just get an x or h pipe for now. upr has x pipes that sound good and will fit right into your setup for about $100. and you can do the work yourself. if you ever decide you want headers later down the road, any exhaust shop can cut the x-pipe shorter to fit lt headers.

also, it was stated a little earlier an x-pipe will give you a little more hp in the higher rpms

yeah i was looking at upr...they seem to have the cheapest xpipe prices ive seen. I was thinking about doing what you said earlier...just purchasing the xpipe for now...considering headers are so expensive...are you sure though that i can just purchase a xpipe from upr...get that replaced by my stock h...and later down the road get that cut to fit l/t headers?

yes, but if you go cat-less you will need to find somebody you know that does exhaust because the muffler shop could get all kinds of fines even if they dont do emissions in your state. some places dont care though.
