Underdrive Pullys Yes or No?

Are they worth the money?
and since i live in Las Vegas where it gets hot As "HELL" no pun intended, will they reduce the proformance of A/C

spike_africa 08-12-2008 02:56 PM

I have them and felt little power improvement, then again I didn't really feel any of my mods other then the nitrous. It will make the a/c not as cold at first but mine still gets ridiculously cold.

jjtgiants 08-12-2008 04:35 PM

I vote no....I didn't them on my 03 GT and my A/C didn't blow as hard and my interior lights didn't seem to be as bright

96blackgt54 08-13-2008 05:18 AM

I vote no also!

Gains = almost nothing for a daily driver.

M_Stang 08-13-2008 12:36 PM

Wow ok
its sounds like its not worth the money
thanks guys any other suggestios on little bolt on's
Im seriously thinking about getting nitrous
any Recomendations on whats hot and not?

P.S Im tryin not to break the bank
thanks guys

spike_africa 08-13-2008 12:39 PM

Look in the power adder section we have many posts on nitrous.

M_Stang 08-13-2008 12:42 PM

Ok for shure

na svt 08-14-2008 11:51 AM

Yes, they are very much worth the it and will not reduce the performance of the a/c. I gained 11rwhp with only the march dampener (same day dyno) and had no alt or wp pulley. I used March #1158 Fluid Dampener. Do not get the piggyback pulleys.

I had no charging issues and the volt meter read 14.4 at idle. No dimmong of the lights was experienced and cooling was not affected.

There will probably be no SOTP feel but 11rwhp is a damn good gain for only $112. Ask this same question over on Corral or Mod Depot and the responses will be far different as many of the members have small diameter dampeners and ahve had good results.

M_Stang 08-16-2008 02:44 PM

ok
ive haeard many different things about pullys
some good some bad

spike_africa 08-17-2008 05:00 PM

Do you have a GT or v6?

M_Stang 08-19-2008 11:38 PM

GT

It's just not worth the hassle. Save the money and spend it on a short shifter or a cobra front brake kit. Those things at least do something you'll appreciate daily. Pulleys... take em or have 150-200 bucks you could do something useful with. You could even add a Hayden oil cooler which I'm sure your engine would appreciate on those hot ass Vegas summer days for about 100 bucks.

ya i will look into the oil coolers and brakes
bc i need a brake job anyway so i will look into those
Thx

I live in Houston and was at my performance shop Monday morning and it get's hot here but not like Vegas more humid here and when I mentioned UDP'S everyone in the shop that heard me said don't waste your money save it and get that dent fixed on your rear 1/4 panel!! That made my mind up Jimmy

engineman312 08-22-2008 04:43 PM

good thread, good information... i just bought a 2002 GT and its got some bolt ons done to it, including UDPs.

not wanting to jack the thread, but i'll have to remove it if and when i put a blower on it, right??

spike_africa 08-23-2008 07:00 AM

Yeah when you add a supercharger or roots setup (basically anything other then a turbo) you have to remove it to get the correct amount of boost.

venom 08-23-2008 11:42 AM

Too many essential things like AC and charging are robbed for a few HP.

na svt 08-23-2008 09:51 PM

Are you guys for real? A small diameter dampener does not reduce cooling effectiveness, hurt charging or hurt a/c performance. I installed only the March Fluid Dampener (no a/c or wp pulley) and got 11rwhp. What other part will add 10rwhp for less than $120? People spend twice that on CAIs that make less power and require a tune. Take it from experience, they work and are a good bang for the buck mod.

venom 08-24-2008 08:47 AM

If you are claiming that adding pulleys does not affect anything, I have a bridge I would like to sell you.

If you have ac on, have amplifiers plus in traffic at night you will notice it. Rob Peter to give to Paul. Dont make statements that are just not true. The desciption and science on how pulleys give you extra power is obviously so making such statement about how they dont affect anything is just silly. It may have not affected your driving that you have notice but many other members have noticed issues including myself.

If you want real power save all your $$$ and add a SC,turbo,Gas,twin screw and call it a day.

na svt 08-24-2008 09:25 AM

A small diameter did not have an negative affects on my car. Adding the WP and alt pulleys may have caused some issues but I chose to only go with the dampener and it added 11rwhp....not bad for less than $120.

M_Stang 08-24-2008 08:49 PM

i think of it and the way it makes power i because it slows down your acessories
so it has to reduce performance

chefalan23 08-24-2008 10:13 PM

i live in sc where it gets africa hot and i have the mach 1000 stereo in my car and i dont have any "problems" with my pulleys. if im sitting at a stoplight my dashlights dim a little but it doesnt really bother me. i dont have any charging issues, but you wont get much of a seat of the pants improvement. they do free up hp, and dont have significant effects on your car. if you must, make sure you get steeda pulleys. imho, its not money well spent.

00gt_conv 08-25-2008 08:20 PM

Would they do anything for gas mileage, cause they free up some lag on the engine making less work for it?

chefalan23 08-25-2008 10:03 PM

dont look for any bolt ons to improve you mpg's.

The older 5.0 cars had 75 amp alternators while the mod motor alternators are 140 amp units so electrical "shortages" are rare. Also, replacing only the dampener has less effect than changing teh dampener along with the alt and wp pulleys. I've installed many small diameter dampeners and none of the cars experienced any of the problems that have been brought up in this thread...even under very harsh conditions (temps above 110deg). The only change was an increase in power.

BTW, not everyone can afford a supercharger, the supporting mods that go along with them and the resulting rebuild that occurs because of the increased wear on parts that were spec'd for an n/a motor.

pullys

Id think that 150-200 bones is a good price for 10+ HP, i put pullys and a 75mm Tb and noticed a little. No AC change, no Charge Change. Its an ok deal because its easy to put on, cheap, and adds hp. My fav.:D

Keyword is "noticable" change. Just because you dont notice it doesnt mean nothing is affected.

You can do what you like but I suggest buying a k&n adds 15hp thats 25hp for under $500 lol.

Remeber this formula HP = $$$
