thinking about going with the stage 1 cams what do you guys think? anyone with that setup on here? I'd like to know some opinions from people who have them and people who are getting them Should I replace anything else or just the cams with the stage 1s? and what am i missing by not going with 2's?

I honestly would just get the stage twos and be done with it, but my car has 75000 miles on it so it needs new valvesprings anyway, so id just replace those anyways. Thats just my opinion.

You would see about 20-25 whp with stage 1s dyno tuned and probably 30-35 with the stage 2s.

Here are the pros and cons I see

Stage 1 -

Pros - Does not require springs so labor is much cheaper ($350 from MPH). The Stage 1s do not loose any low end power and you gain about 25whp when tuned peak to peak and more under the curve.

Cons - Does not give you the powerband of the Stage 2s or the peak and upper rpm power

Stage 2 -

Pros - Great upper power while still good mid and low end. Raises powerband higher. Insane HP gains up top up to 55whp vs stock.

Cons - Requires springs (extra $200) plus install is alot harder and more costly ($1000 from MPH for both). Requires upgraded gears, tune, and if AT a torque convertor.

Install will be done by me and my dad (like always) so I don't have to pay for any labor! Stage 2 sounds so sweet, if I do it I might as well go all out I guess.. and those cams would be ready for a blower if i went s/c right? on MT it says it requires a chip? will just a hand held tuner solve this issue?

Stage 1's are gonna be about 15-20whp
Stage 2's are about the same...maybe 25
They both make good power up high. Stock motors won't see enough rpm to warrant Stage 2's. Hell, PI cams need to be shifted at 6000, how much more RPM will you rev it? I have stage 1's and shift at 6400rpm. Stage 2's aren't much different. A lot of misinformation about cams out there. Real advantage of Stage 1's is not having to use the Comp Springs.

Stage 1's you can use a mail-order tune, though some might not agree. Stage 2's require a tune from what I have been told.

No, I belive you would need a blower cam for that...the stage 2s are good for high hp for n/a setups...if you plan on using a blower soon, just get blower cams now...or just wait untill you geta blower and get blower cams

i dont plan to get a blower for at least 2 years i'd say.

hmm. when i do the cams they will be dyno tuned either way, because i'd want to see the dyno results also lol. i was hoping for 30rwhp out of stage 1's, guess not though. trying to hit that 300rwhp mark.

well no matter how you tune it, N/A cams will never work as well with a blower, as a custom grinded blower cam can.

youre going to have set the timing again when you put in the cams you might want to get a timing adjuster to get a few more horses out of the setup while you have everything apart anyways

so this is how i am..

the car will be dyno tuned after the cam install (will not need the timing adjuster)

there won't be a s/c on my car for at least 2 years and I don't mind trading out cams then, I want what's best for my N/A car.. it will never have nitrous either.

i want the most hp I can get N/a.. my goal is 300 rwhp like I said, i dont mind to change out all the valves and springs, if its worth it ill spend the extra time and money doing it. if its not then forget it

i also want my car to be very reliable. is this still possible with cams?

thanks guys for all your help so far

for the most N/A hp stage 2 cams...it will be streetable, somone here has stage 2 cams for their d/d ...if your dad can handle springs, go ahead! if not, the install would be so much, youd be 1/3 to a blower...

lol the problem I'm having now is convincing my dad my car needs cams! it's kinda stupid because it's my car, I pay all the payments, pay all the insurance, pay for all the gas, pay for all the mods, but he's my mechanic and does the installations.. i don't trust myself to do it on my own so I only get to help him do stuff. So if he doesn't like something all he has to do is tell me he won't help and I don't want anyone else working on my car. So any suggestions on something I can tell him why stage 2 cams are needed??? lol. more horsepower doesn't work with him, he says its fast enough. grr!

LOL, just tell him that it will run better and get better gas mileage due to the higher hp and the engine not having to work as hard to make the same power...lol. Good luck convincing him.

listen man i will tell you One thing. If you wanna hit the 300rwhp , and your already at 270rwhp. Then get the VT stage 1 cams. those will bring you easily to the 300 range.the stage 1 have proven to add 22rwhp without a tune. And an amazing increase of 33rwhp with a tune. I seen the dyno sheets myself.Of course i cant say that the stage 2 wont give you even MORE power. but if your goal is 300rwhp then stick with the stage one. cheaper and less work for you ccasion1

Im going to have to say thats its likely that you wont hit 300 with just the cams. Unless your car is a factory freak that is. Most of the cars Ive seen that got to 300 have had ported heads. Actually, I think all of them have. Best of luck to ya, and I cant wait to see what they put out for you.

If your looking for power and a lope, go with stage 1's. Anyone who has heard my car can attest to that. Actually there is a running joke that I have Stage 1- 3/4 cams because of the extreme lope. The stage 2's would be nice also. I just feel like to get the most out of the 2's you need to be able to shift around 6300-6400. I got 20rwhp out of my 1's, but i had other mods go one to help with this (full exhaust, etc). Not having to do the springs is a big deal, that adds about 4 hours or more to the job. Either way you'll enjoy them.

when making your final decision, listen to those who actually have the cams, not those who have heard about them

lol yeah.. that was my original goal with the thread, hence the name . I would love to do cams, the whole "is it worth it?" doesn't bother me, I know cams are worth it. I don't have to pay install and me and my dad spent 2-3 days doing all my exhaust, we can take the time to do the job right. My main concern is will my car be more likely to die on me and such

Yes I have video, but for some reason anytime I try to upload on here it just doesn't work. No matter how small the file. I fear I may be PC retarded.
