off road xpipe legal in TX?

Hi I was wondering if an off road x-pipe was legal in TEXAS what states is it not legal in?

Look to see if your county does emission testing. If you have to pass the sniff test then you will fail with an o/r pipe due to the cats not being on. If you have to do a visual test, then I'm sure you can find a shop that will "look past" not having the cats on. My town is starting the sniff test in 2006, so I have a little time to play without the cats.

Depends on what area you are in. I live in Dallas and they check emmisions here.

P.S. In towns that do check emissions, you can always find somewhere that will "pass" you regardless.

As long as you have MIL eliminators you will pass the "sniff" test...that's why they are made...to turn of your malfunction indication lights...which is what makes you fail if it is reporting a malfunction, or if you have a chip with the correct information.

that is totaly untrue. Mil's will not make you pass the sniffer test at all. all they do is make the ses light not come on thats it. without cats you will fail the sniffer hands down everytime. if you go to place that does not do the sniffer just runs the codes then yeha i guess you could pass but i cant think of a place that doesnt do the sniffer when you get checked.

NO.....that is not true. All the "sniff" test does is check to see if your computer is sending codes saying that something on your car is malfuntioning...i.e. the cats. If your computer thinks that they are functioning properly with the off road pipe, via a chip or MIL eliminators, you will pass emissions. Trust me, I have done it in my county, not saying all counties are the same. All they do is put it in your tail pipe to see if your cats are working properly, if they are, or your car "says" they are then you pass. You may fail a visual inspections unless you have a prochamber in which case you can say that it is a high flow cat in the box or something like that. I don't know of anyone who has failed with the MIL eliminators installed and functioning properly. Sniff test have nothing to do with air/fuel ratios;which off road pipes change slightly unless you get it corrected with a chip.

the sinff test checks your exhuast gases hence the name sniff test. maybe where you go they dont do it that way but that is why its called a sniff test. trust me i now i have doen them before.

They don't do sniff tests on the 96+cars? ...and NO o/r exhaust is not legal in texas! :)

spike_africa 11-11-2004 11:24 AM

yes they do. they check all cars unless you car came without them aka really old cars.

You have it backwards...the reason they don't do a sniffer test on the 96+ cars is becasue they just hook the machine up to the cars computer, and get all the info from there..no need to do the sniffer test if the computer says its ok! On the older cars this was not possible and hence why they must phisically check for emmissions..i.e...the sniffer test! ;)

I give up.

Jeremy 11-13-2004 07:39 PM

If you have MIL's though doesn't that pretty much cut off the signal for no cats? I mean if they just hook it up to the computer and it checks fine because of the MIL's then there is no need for the sniff test?
