LT header install 4.6 2v

I googled the c-rap out of this subject and was surprised not to fing a good installation write up on this topic. I basically want to know if it is worth paying a shop to install them. Or should I do it myself (I have access to a lift and all the tools in the world lol (most of them) Oh, and I dont want to weld anything. Anybody got anything?

csledd 06-04-2006 12:01 AM

me and my dad installed my LTs, X-pipe, and catback in our small one car garage using jack stands. It took us a couple days (we're slow and take lots of breaks). The main thing I could recommend is dropping the k-member if you do it yourself. Lots of people have said they were able to do it with a lift and not dropping the k-member, so I don't know about that.. because I didn't have access to a lift. To be honest, it all depends on if it bothers you to spend money on installation. It's not an extremely hard task, its just time consuming and you may get frustrated lol

Do it yourself. You'll gain knowledge and save alot of money. One shop here that has it listed on their website is charging $500 for install. That's too damn much. Like csledd said, it's just time consuming and you'll get frustrated, but sh*t, that's life.

Thanks for the info...I have a manual trans so I have read that depending what co. I go with fir the LT's that I wont have to drop it to install them. Oh and I will have to use a "shorty" x pipe with the LT's correct?

Hey I have been to Paducah

Csledd, said it best, the install is not hard just a PITA. I did mine over two days, I didn't drop the K-memeber, just lifted the motor on the pass side with the starter out. With the K-frame out you will have a TON more room to work. Make sure you match the X-pipe with the headers, make sure they fit together. Take your time and be ready to :censored: a lot.

thats my thread from when i did shorties. i didnt do long tubes but install is same.

zigzaggthefag321 06-04-2006 12:33 PM

Well, if I do it at all it HAS to be long tubes...I'll only have one day to complete the install as this car is my only car...hope I can do it alone in one day. Wont be for a while though...spent too much $$ so far so I gotta pay off some of it first.

yeah we tried lifting the motor up a ton and in all kinds of direction and we couldn't do **** lol. we could get some of the bolts on the LTs but not all of them, so that's when we stopped waisting time and dropped the k-member :)

Whoa, that looks like a huge PITA..especially on jack stands.

dfroster 06-04-2006 01:18 PM

Hell, That's all I need. A few jackstands and a whole thing of coffee LOL. The front and ends were simple, the two upper in the middle sucked!!! plus the airtubes. Goodluck when you do it. BTW get a few dif 13mm wrenches, short ones and a "s" shaped 13mm will save your life on the pass side. That's how I got the hard ones done.

yeah.. we actually took a torch to one of the 13mm wrenches and bent it to make the "s" wrench lol. it ended up coming in use again when we were installing the cams.

Ok, yeah I've got all those tools...about 40k worth...so in that respect I'll be ok I think...I have all kinds of flex head/extensions/wobble sockets...you name it. I just hope I can do it all in one day so I dont have to walk home from my shop/job.

dfroster 06-04-2006 02:04 PM

I could have finished in a day...a LONG day. If you have the motivation to get it done, you will. I checked with the shop I use for dynos and they charge $350 for the install, best price in Jax, would have cost me $250 ( I do a lot for them). I almost let them have -at-it. But I really enjoy doing the work myself.
Csledd::: if you have a cutting torch you could have just hacked through the inner fender and been done in like..an hour, hour and a half at most...

We finished mine in 6 hours but I work for a dealership so I had lift access, air lift, engine hoist, all the tools, and access to the parts department for bolts.

What, do most kits not come with the correct bolts?? If not, regular Ford header bolts work right?

dfroster 06-04-2006 05:24 PM

Factroy are studs, I had to remove the studs and install the new ones SLP sent. Some bolts and some studs. I used PB blaster the night before removing them and let them soak overnight...All came out easy.

I couldnt even install my x-pipe up in that area...... so I guess that means I should stay away from dropping the K member right?

BBK and SLP didnt seem to match up right with bolts so I had to get some.

01GTBlown 06-05-2006 06:28 AM

I'll be doing this once fall comes around and it goes in the garage. I'll do a big write up on it.

2000novigt 06-05-2006 06:41 PM

I did mine and it took about 7 hours with a lift, it is not hard at all. It just takes time and patience and lots of beer!!!!!!!!!
