Default Synthetic Oil ?

The stang is coming up to big oil change #4. I think I'm going to go with a full synthetic. I currently run reg valvoline, 5-20 (ithink). Is there anything special I have to do to switch to a synthetic? I didn't know if it was bad if the syn mixed with the little bit of reg oil that would be left in the very bottom of the pan or what. Sorry if this is a stupid question. Prolly go with a valvoline syn, have always used valvoline and never had any problems.

ive heard great things about quakerstate and castrol GTX.

Mobil 1 is always a good bet

sorry i didnt even answer your Q. A mech at pep boys once told me that it wouldnt hurt at all if you switched from reg to syn. You woulndt need to flush the engine or anything like that

How many miles are on your engine? Ive heard you shouldn't do it if you have over 40k, but then again ive seen people do it with 100k +...Just to think about, I use Mobile1 5-20 and i love it...Also Royale Purple, I used on my previous car was pretty good.

I don't use anything BUT Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec. Never once had any problems.

I started using Mobil 1 at about 65k and it's been working great. I will continue using it. I have heard that once you start using synthetic not to switch back to regular oil afterwards.

Switching back and forth is no problem. Rule of thumb is to use 5W-30 when nerer and then go to 10w-30 as the car gets older. Where you should make the change is debatable. Some say 50, some 75 and some 100k. I run the lighter weight on my Suburban and it has 80k on it. The car does better with it on cold starts as the oil gets up top a bit quicker. Anyone with a Chevy truck with the 5.3 knows what I am talking about.

Mobil 1 is decent but there is better synthetics. If I were you, id run Amsoil or royal purple.

Royal Purple here. But I have used Mobil 1. I've heard after alot of miles, not to use synthetic. Sorta different subject but before i sold my 95 GT it had almost 80 thousand miles on the tranny and put synthetic in it and if i did 70mph or more, it would start grinding really bad. i drained the oil (yes some real small metal flakes came out) and put regular tranny fluid in it and it never did it again.

Mobil 1 is a great synthetic. I swapped my '04 GT with it back at 1,200 miles. It remained in there until 25k. At which point, I added my S/C was told that a Syn will have blow-by problems so I have been using 5w30 GTX. Change it out every 5k and you are good to go. 5w30 Mobil 1 is fine, don't even bother with the 0w20 stuff.

Go with Mobil 1 5w30 but make sure you get a good engine flush to get rid of the old stuff because it is really bad to mix reg oil with syn. sub one synthitic oil with a qt of lucas oil stablizer that will give the engine better lubercation and bump up the oil pressure. but yeah when i change my oil i never go without the lucas!

YOu should change to a thicker oil when your motor starts to get little leaks, then it wont leak anymore.

Amsoil is definetly were it's at. Only problem is you pretty much have to order it by the box and it's not readily avaliable. I run Mobil 1 in my car now. But in my RX7 I ran Amsoil full sythentic and changed it every 2,000 miles.

You are just wasting your time and money by changing every 2000 miles. There is absolutely no difference in changing at 2000 compared to 5000 or better to the final milage rating unless your car is specificly for drag racing, road course racing, or any time of major circumstance.

Well it wasn't daily driven so I was ussualy way over due time wise. And RX7's are a tad bit diffrent.

k, my 2 cents...point of reference, i work at an auto parts store. syn oil is great for your car no doubt, but it isnt cheap. pick a brand and stick with it, dont be a price hopper. now, once you have joined the club of full on syn oil, not syn blend, you should not go back to regular oil. the syn. oil in straight on synthetic is not the same as in the blends. full syn oil breaks down regular petrol. oil, you could flush your system but that doesnt mean its all out for sure. and could cause problems down the road. now if you want to try something less expensive go with a syn blend. with syn blend you can go back and forth between regular oil and syn blend. and actually motorcraft's 5w-20 oil is a syn blend and costs less than some regular oils, such as Q state, and Penz. at my store its $2.29 a quart, compared to $2.49 for QS and $2.89 for penz. and its top quality oil, in all honesty every motorcraft part we sell comes with a life time warranty, i wish i could say the same for ac delco and mopar. pretty much any oil can go 5000 miles, ask a mechanic, and for sure a syn blend oil can go for 5000+ miles, make sure you use a good filter with it. right now the biggest joke is the mobil clean 5000, its just regular old mobil motor oil in a new bottle with a new marketing campaign. as for oil filters I would recommend the fram tough guard series. it has above a 99% muti pass eff. and is rated at above 20 micron filtration. and just so you know, and you can check this out by reading the boxes, mobil 1 oil filters and k&n oil filters are only rated from 10-20 microns. plus a fram TG is half the price, you're not paying for the name, you're paying for the product. i hope this info helps you out...
