Default Best computer for 2 grand

Ok, my mom wants a new computer ( and after the novelty wears off it's going into my room )

she doesnt want to spend over 2 grand

I already suggested that I could build a nice one, but she doesnt want that..

She's looking at the Dell XPS 600 and a Gateway somethin or other

what do you guys suggest? It's not gonna be for gaming or anything...basically all she'll do on it is browse the web. But once it's mine, I'm going to burn/listen to alot of music, use photo editing software ( photoshop ) and look at stuff online, of course

Thanks in advance

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and love it. No problems and it was a really great deal when I got it. Check it on Dell. If you are anti-Dell sorry for posting this.

Gateway has a pretty nice system.. I believe it's a GT5048 or it maybe under GM5048.. is the same system though. It has a Pentium D (dual core processor).. 2 GB of DDR2 ram, 500 GB HD, dvd burner, media center edition of windows (has the TV tuner card so you can watch TV on the computer and record TV also). The price at Best Buy for it is $1499.99.. you could get a Gateway 17" LCD for like $350 or maybe a little less. If it were me, I'd build my own system (well that's what I've always done). I did buy a Gateway once and it was a really good machine.. I bought it in 1999 and I still have it, my brother uses it everyday.

with the default settings or did you customize it any? It has the same processor that the Gateway I mentioned has.. that Alienware has 1 GB of RAM and an 80??!?! GB Sata hard drive.. why does it only have 80 gb that's insane. but the good thing about alienware's is you can customize them. you also pay a butt ton just for the brand name

I would agree that building your own is a good idea, but his mom probably wants something with a warranty and stuff.

Build your own. I built mine and it was faster than anything you could buy at the time, and it's cheaper too. Plus I know it has all high quality parts!

I AM a warrantee...all they can do is fix it if you break it physically, otherwise it's your fault and you gotta fix it anyways... that and alota times things break cuz the computers are obsolete neways...like a great labtop with an onboard video card....and the video card craps out...go figure...

lol what are you talking about grimmz, what do you mean if it breaks physically? if a onboard video card craps out generaly the whole motherboard is replaced, which is covered my MFG warranty as long as it was a defect and not caused by something else (example power surge is not covered by mfg warranty)

You really should build your own. It is a LOT cheaper and you can get everything better...

my comp was about $950 with a monitor and i ahve
an amd athlon 64 bit processor
1 GBram
120 GB hard drive
dvd/cd burner.
my comp is about 2 years old and it still is better than a lot of things you can buy. talk your mom into building it, if you know how or someone can help you put it together, its worth it.

I build my own systems because I like to put in it what I want in it and I like saving money.. but then I spend $500 on just a processor

The pentium d's that are out right now dont seem to be that great. Not a high enough processor speed yet. I would say go p4 3.6-3.8 w/ hp technology a gb of ram and around a 80 -120gb hard drive. build your own its soo much cheaper and you can even pick a better graphics card. Dont go any lower then 256mb on that either. Trust me when you get a gaming machine you want the extra cooling featurs. The machines heat up real quick.
