Looting....
I have started thinking about all these reports about people looting and such and it got me thinking! Given the opportunity would you loot? As for me, if i had a family to feed and i had no other choice, then yes! I would take what i needed to ensure the safety of my family no matter what! I would only take the essential things though such as food, water, medicine and a boat to make sure they did not drown! From the looks of it, alot people have taken advantage of the the tragedy and begun looting items, that they have no use during these tragic times! Heres a perfect example!

I would only take what I needed to survive if there was no other options available. If I had to resort to looting food and water I would return to the store when order was restored and pay for all of the items I took. There is no excuse for stealing to profit under any circumstances.

Shooting down National Guardsmen, Cops
The street gangs taking over New Orleans have started shooting down National Guardsmen, cops and relief workers. Choppers trying to air lift desperately ill patients from New Orleans hospitals are being fired upon by organized groups of men with weapons. Life-flights are currently halted - resulting, no doubt, in additional deaths.
Sorry, the debate over looting stops when crap like this starts happening.
Issue live ammo to the cops and guardsmen, then make the announcement with loud speakers, block by block: "Anyone seen in the streets with guns with be fired upon. Anyone seen looting will be called upon to halt, and if they fail to halt, will be fired upon." Start a systematic sweep of the areas most fragile, probably around the hospitals, relief agency encampments, and refugee centers. Once that is done, expand to include overlapping zones that can be declared relatively safe - then repeat, expanding the effort as more troops arrive.
To do this would necessitate the Governor of Louisiana declare Martial Law in New Orleans - something they have failed to do prior to this, and the failure of which is costing lives right now.
Or let it keep sliding down into chaos.

Stealing is stealing, no matter how you justify it.
if you can drive your car then hit the road and take your family to an out of state relative untill you can get things back in order on the homefront. It isnt like the entire nation was trashed here. If you dont have any out of state relatives, or any out of state friends, then chances are nobody likes you and you dont even have a family.
These looters are just typical examples of people with no sence of decency and community, taking advantage of a crappy situation to up the comfort of thier own lives. Every one of them should be shot on site. There are shelters, there are relief organizations, there are friends and neighbors. There is no justification for looting with this scenario because there are still honerable options and better ways to handle the situation. Any one of these people who claim it was thier only option are lazy and stupid. They are not helping anything, only adding to the problem and making a disgrace out of thier community, town, state, and country.
If there is EVER a point where looting is the only reasonable option left then it wont matter because the country and government have failed the citizens to protect them and at that point law is disolved and morality is the only guide, anarchy would become the norm untill some county claims our land as thier own.
Take your family, and get out of state, dont justify stealing with a crappy scenario. I dont care WHAT these people say, they do have other options, they are merley trying to justify stealing and opportunistic selfishness by claiming honerable reasons, and that itself is a spit into the face of morality.

Damn straight, i agree with you 100%. it sucks good people get into this situation, but these actions can NOT be tolerated, sometimes the good citizens have to live in a little less comfort because of the bad, but at least that way thier belongings (what is left of them) will be secured.

I wouldn't have been there to loot anything. I hate to sound brazen about this situation, But if I (me personally) lived in New Orleans. I would have a plan to get out of there. And I would have left before Katrina hit the gulf coast out of Fla. They know they are under sea level. And I realize the poor may not have the resources to just leave, but I guess that is a consequence of living there. As for the looting, they should spend so much energy trying to leave now before things get even worse. Stuff can be replaced. Anything that was looted would be waste soon anyway. Big deal. And instead of a trash can full of beer (as 1 picture showed). Without water I wouldn't even drink alcohol because you'll dehydrate in a hurry. Then you may not be able to get out. The worst is happening right now. Unsanitary conditions will kill most still there. The whole coast of Lousiana should have been a Ghost Town. Instead of trying to get people out now. Once again I understand the poor and minorities having a hard time doing this. But there was warnings in advance. Just my humble Opinion. And I do feel bad for those stuck in all that mess.

And another thing while I'm at it. Bush should order an all out military type evac. Right now. There are plenty of Blackhawks, C-130's, And C-47's which are equipped for short landings and take offs. Lets get those people out of there now. There is plenty of united states to go around. Commandeer some motels and shelters. They better act quick though. **** is going bad in the bayou rat now

So im watching the news this morning, and saw something that caught my eye. They were interviewing a pregnant woman, surrounded by her friends, (mom, sisters, girlfriends, etc.) and sitting beside her, were two, TWO, Louis Vuitton pocketbooks. Dont know if they were fake or not, but I couldnt help but think, did someone go on a shopping spree? Maybe thats bad, and I shouldnt judge them like that, but Id think someone who could afford a purse like that, could get out. Its turned into a hell hole, and I agree with the martial law thing. Thats what its going to take, but then we'll have lawsuits upon lawsuits, from stupid people...

Air Force
Air Force just finished reviving the New Orleans air port yesturday afternoon, and flights have been pouring in since. The airport was underwater at first, then the water receded, and then it came back (second leavee let go, I guess). Now that its dry again, the Air Force has brought in a complete setup (lights, power generation, their own controllers, radios, gas dump, etc.) just like they would have to do in an invasion.
The government was slow to get off the dime - in my opinion, the early effects of the hurricane fooled a lot of folks running the show in New Orleans - and now they're trying to do better. A WHOLE BUNCH of "too little, too late", but there you go. Poor response time, and poor planning, of course. (Who in the world thought it was a good idea to keep adding on to a port city built almost entirely below sea level anyway?)
There will be a lot of finger pointing, and after-the-disastor analysis, but my immediate thoughts are:
1. The leavee system was built 40+ years ago to handle no more than a category 3 Hurricane. Multiple administrations (Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and now W) threw the dice after that, gambling that no category 4 or 5 would hit New Orleans. Gambles of this size are poor bets, but they save money that would otherwise go to important government functions such as purchasing votes to stay in power...
2. Building a city below sea level in 1800 can be excused by naive engineering and indifference to the conditions of the lower classes and slaves that had to live in the tidal plain. This excuse went away about 140 years ago. To continue to allow additional construction in the same location for those 140 years is idiocy of a high order. Needless to say, to move there and choose to live there puts your intelligence into question as well.
3. Once the inevitable happened, the advent of chaos could have been prevented with thoughtful planning and implementation of immediate Martial Law to keep control of the situation BEFORE it spiraled into anarchy. What you see on the news (and surely what we see is only the tiniest fraction of the human suffering actually occurring) could have been prevented with firm action by the Governor of Louisiana (can't remember her name) and the Mayor of New Orleans (can't remember her name, either).
4. What's up with turning sports stadiums into semi-permanent cess pools?
We have moth-balled military bases all over the country - most of them with completely functional barracks, mess halls, latrines, etc. Has anybody thought of using them? For that matter, what about the home bases of all the troops deployed overseas? Common sense, seems to me.
Just some initial thoughts. Too much to process any quicker.

The most sickening crap is that there are reports of women being raped in all the chaos . FFS in the middle of a flippin disaster area some ******* decides it is a good time to get one off, by taking advantage of someone who is in a dire situation. Sick **** like that need a one way ticket to hell.

Shoot to Kill
Louisiana Governor has ordered "Shoot to Kill".
Good.
Only problem is, its about a week too late.
Somebody must have told her there was a problem in New Orleans.
Oblivious. Now she's demanding a "Berlin Drop" into New Orleans.
For one thing, parachuting supplies isn't necessary - the Air Force has the airport functioning on an emergency basis, and the Army has fleets of trucks streaming down the back roads (passing the folks who need the aid on the trucks going the other way, of course).
A week late and a dollar short.
Reactions like a cobra - car, that is.
