Talking Building my first AR-15.

I just placed an order for a bare lower receiver from Palmetto State Armory. I am going to be picking out a good upper to go with it in the next week or so. Who else has an AR?

I dont personally have one but my uncle is on SWAT and he lets us go out and shoot all his guns. I wish i had $1500 to drop on an AR. Or better yet $2800 for and intergrally surpressed AR from Red Jacket

I have one, but it was bought pre-built from a buddy. Love the AR. 22LR conversion is my friend as well.

How much did you pay for the PSA lower? They were like $50 last month for a couple of weeks, I missed out.

I don't own an AR but I can tell you everything about them..lol

SWAT is bad ***. you don't have to spend $1500 to get a decent AR though.

I will get a conversion upper for mine at some point but I'm going with a 5.56/.223 upper for now.

A lot more than $50 It ran me $80 and I got the one with the safe/fire markings rather than the bullet picto. Just a heads up though, One of the reps for Palmetto hinted that they were doing the $50 lower again for labor day. I am probably going to get this rifle kit to go with the lowerhttp://palmettostatearmory.com/2277.php What do you think?

Oh and where is the best place to get surplus ammo? I am only used to buying pistol ammo.

Shoot Wolf ammo. You will be fine with a carbine buffer if it's a carbine or mid-length gas system and 16" barrel.

Just don't shoot brass-cased ammo through it in the same session, after firing Wolf/Tula.

Here is how it turned out. I completed the stripped lower with the PSA Moe lpk. The upper is a PSA middy with FN CHF barrel. For an optic I went with an Aimpoint Pro and the irons are MBUS. Overall the build went exactly as I had hoped. I managed to assemble the lower without any marring or scratches of any sort. The fit and finish for the upper and lower are perfect. I hope to get to the range in the next week or two.

Not shabby, those PSA kits are good deals for budget builds, and I'm glad you went with some name-brand optics instead of a BSA/UTG/Leapers sight like most fools.

Though, I ******* hate the way those MOE squared handguards look, rawrrrr.

GO SHOOT IT

After checking my build list, and comparing it to the price of a Spike's tactical Mid-length, I'll probably just end up ordering a full rifle this winter. My build is all BCM/Spike's parts as it is and it came out to about $1000 with Magpul grip, stock, and BIUS.

I spent right around $1200 for the rifle, 2 mags, and Aimpoint optic. The Optic alone was $410 and several of the upgrades aren't necessary though. You can build a nice Palmetto AR-15 For just over $600. These are built to all of the military Specs so they are high quality. Let me know if you have any ?s I can point you in the right direction.

In my opinion PSA is the best deal going for a budget AR. They are offering great rifles for lower prices than their competitions inferior rifles. As for the Aimpoint, I thought about going with a Primary Arms micro but felt the extra money was well worth it for the Aimpoint. Too many of the cheaper ones aren't designed to stand up to much more than plinking or airsoft use.

Trust me I hate the stock hand guards more than you hate the Moe It is only temporary though as I'm planning to drop in a free floated Daniel Defense Omega when I get a few more bucks.

I will be shooting it soon. I picked up a few hundred rounds of Lake City XM193

As for your build, Spikes are great and would have been my first choice had their indefinite backorder not caused me to look at some other options. BCM rifles are awesome but cost a bit more than PSA and Spikes. What I recommend is assembling a PSA (or whatever brand has a rollmark you like) lower and checking out the Spikes uppers that Aim is getting in. They recently had a Spikes mid length upper with FN cold hammer forged barrel, Nickle coated bolt and carrier, and tungsten buffer for $630. That is one hell of an upper for the price. Are you just looking for a basic 16" carbine?

Going with a 16" midlength. I haven't checked any prices on Spike's uppers, the BCM upper I was considering is $489 but still needs rear sight, BCG, T-handle, and hand guards.

And I'm going to shoot Wolf through my AR, it's not a special rifle. lol

But in all honesty..$770 for a Spike's midlength sceams deal to me. I can deal with the carrying handle until I can afford optics, all I'd immediately want to change is the grip and trigger guard.

EVEN COMES WITH A P-MAG!

Man that is a hell of a deal. I didn't realize it came with a hard case, detachable carry handle and mid length gas system. I wonder is they will get them back in at that price. I am thinking about trying Spikes Dynacomp muzzle break.
