Latest purchase and some news

1 Attachment(s)
Just picked this up yesterday. I was considering building an AR since r3d has a good deal on a lower, but the cost just wasn't going over well with the wife. So instead got this on sale. Yes it's only a .22, but that's all I wanted since it will give me something fun and cheap to shoot. I have the glock for something more powerful.

So that's the purchase, and the news is that come Sept. I'm going to be a father.

We should just have the forum renamed Gunboards.com

Congrats!

You just never know. And at $20 for 525 rounds, there will be plenty of ammo to go around.

Slim03GT 03-16-2011 10:47 AM

20 bucks for over 500 rounds wins. I like it. Congratz on being a daddy!

PColav6 03-16-2011 11:07 AM

500 rounds isn't enough.

Nice. My buddy who has a S&W M&P .40 for carry, recently got a Walther .22 pistol for some target practice. We spent about an hour yesterday shooting at a Nazi Zombie target. Then we got his .17 out to plink off birds at about 125 yards, that was fun.

probiker427 03-16-2011 12:00 PM

Congrats man!

I agree. Crazy how $150 gets you 5000 rounds. Might need to hit that up. I could get the 525 box of the same brand right now for $19. Now I just need to get out more and shoot. Also need to stock up on .40.

krenogin 03-16-2011 02:21 PM

I still think you should have went with a colt that shoots 5.56's. Because you can always convert it to a .22 later. And just save up for the .22 conversion and have basically two guns in one.

Did you even read his post? The Colt sells for over a grand and the M&P 22 for a little over $400. That's a completely different price range.

OP congrats on the new rifle and even more so on the news about becoming a daddy. Are you hoping for a boy or a girl?

mustangV6_04 03-16-2011 08:08 PM

Damn i didn't realize that .22 tacticals are that cheap. I was thinking about getting a spikes but for that price why not get this. Good Deal man and congrats on the baby!

Exactly. I thought about building an AR, but the cost was too much and I wouldn't have been able to swing it with the wife. Plus all I needed was a .22 for some cheap fun shooting at the range.

You know, I really don't care if it's a boy or girl. People keep saying oh come on, what do you really want. It doesn't really matter as long as it's healthy. It's not like you have choice anyways or just give it away if it's not what you wanted. haha

I've got both uppers now. They're set up with 650m zeros using Burris signature series rings and offset's (different rings than in pic). One has a bullet drop compensating target scope with 44mm bell and the other has a big 50mm objective varmint scope, both are 6-18x. Both uppers are in 5.56/.223.

Attachment 14431

I've got my eye on a 24" 6.5grendel and a pair of .22 uppers for them. Still have my 3rd lower waiting for that 6.5.

Took them out to the desert and did some long range work. At 350m they're so easy to hit with they're boring. At 500 it was still holding easy. At 650 the wind became a factor but it was still doable. At 1000 the mirage was so bad I couldn't really see the target so much but I fired once and I landed the shot so we packed up and went to Vegas for lunch.

At what distance could you legitimately take the head off a slow moving zombie

lol, that made me laugh man.
Being in Scotland means guns like that are not available but I love guns, I was in the Army so I understand and like them and there`s plenty of hunting and shooting getting done in my area. I can`t apply for a firearms license though as I have a record.
Some guy in a bar spat in my face and threatened to knock me out so I melted him with a pool cue. So no license for me. Bummer.:o

PColav6 03-22-2011 09:34 PM

Emigrate to the US. We like our guns, and Mustangs. lol

r3dn3ck 03-23-2011 06:45 AM

given an unladen zombie in motion at 1.5mph with a consistent side to side wobble in the stride and a zombie height of 1.8m and calm air, I could do a lethal headshot every time out to 650m with my gun. Center mass hits would be pretty reliable out to 900-1000 if there's no wind. If I had some time to tinker with better ammo (all I've used from those combos so far is 62gr steel cased crap) I could reliably take the head shot (well... ~ 7 in 9 tries anyway) challenge out to 700m. If we can stop their motion it's a lot easier to go farther but the fact of the matter is my guns are .5-.75MOA shooters and I can hold about a half minute and a head is only about 8" across so past 750m it's just blind fuggin luck anyway on a head size target. That's why at that range you take the body shot or use a more accurate gun, like my .270 which is a proven .3MOA shooter with the right ammo.

Shooting my .223's to 1000m is/was purely an academic exercise. I have guns that reach a lot farther than that with much more dramatic results but they hurt to shoot and aren't semi-auto.

My buddy Scooter that was with me managed shots pretty reliably on 10" targets out to 650m and he's never shot anything over 100yrds away before.

00blkstanggt 03-23-2011 09:18 AM

I want a zombie invasion to happen just so I can run around in the streets and hang out on rooftops popping zombies all day.

r3dn3ck 03-23-2011 09:36 AM

And then you have to answer the question of is it an unladen european zombie or an unladen african zombie. The distances each cover over N time is different.

Well of course if the zombie virus break-out starts in Kenya we're all fucked....just sayin.

First they would need to know how to swim. After that than we are fucked.

Then we just start picking off all the worthless people before they can turn into zombies. That way we can at least slow down the outbreak. Survival of the fittest.

Aren't we already doing that? I thought thats what this Libya/Egypt thing was all about. :D

Nonetheless I choose to go after the bitches who would just whine and complain the whole time. Might as well make their fate come just a little bit sooner.

whitestang04 03-24-2011 04:10 PM

This thread took one hell of a turn LOL.

And now I'm back on that AR kick that I thought I had got away from. Thanks guys :p And Spikes Tactical still has a 4-6 week backorder :(

Then go with BCM. Their stuff is the sweetness.

haha, get one. I'm still waiting to go shoot mine. Damn weather has been shitty so the outside range by my house has been closed. I'll have to go to the indoor one this weekend and do some shooting. Also got my package of 500 .40 rounds yesterday, so I'll have to take the glock out too.

r3dn3ck 03-25-2011 11:10 AM

newfrontierarmory.com has awesome deals on custom uppers. I got mine there. BHM barrels are the awesome sauce.

01FR500 03-25-2011 01:59 PM

If I ever decide to build an AR I think I'd have to ask R3d to pick out all the parts for me. I've been trying to look into building one and I've come to the conclusions that there are just way too many different brands and parts for me to build a good one. I'd also like to make it eject the shell on the left side of the gun, for a left handed person. I don't know if they make that.

Edit: Had to google left handed AR. I'm liking the Stag Arms 2HTL upper.

r3dn3ck 03-25-2011 02:05 PM

that feature doubles the price from an entry AR to a tacti-cool gun. It's hard to find plain jane ar's that are left side ejection.

I had considered that. I like BCM a little better then Spikes actually but they cost more unless you get an upper and order a Blem lower receiver. I am trying to decide between an AR and Bullitt scoop deletes, sail panels and quarter glass. Hmmmmmmm decisions . lol

r3dn3ck 03-26-2011 08:42 AM

Spikes, BCM, YHM, Larue, Wilson, etc... are all just taking an otherwise hard to screw up platform and making it absurdly expensive for no good reason. A few tips I learned recently while building my AR's:

1. build it, don't buy it. Buy the upper and lower separately or you pay a premium.
2. Steer clear of tacti-cool crap. Collapsing stock, back-up iron sights (on a scoped rifle) = ok. Forward handles, crap hanging off it = fail. Keep it clean and trim. The bullets and the trigger do the real work.
3. High end brands provide little value. All the castings are made in central forges. They're machined to MIL-SPEC and then any custom bits. Only left side eject are different.
4. Piston guns are still full of fail. Most fail to cycle properly on some regular basis.
5. Piston conversions are pure fail. Almost none of them are even remotely reliable despite the advertising.
6. guns is just like cars, the mods usually do little and cost a shitload.
7. Barrel length is your deciding factor. 16" is ok but short for most things. 20" makes for a pretty long gun. 24" makes for a really long gun.
9. 6mmx45 (223 necked up to 6mm) is stupid easy to deal with and a better solution than 6.8 and holds more bullets than 6.5.
10. The cheapest price for highest quality components for uppers is at newfrontierarmory.com
11. New Frontier also has polymer lowers that are awesome for hella cheap.
12. The only really good aftermarket triggers are Timmney, Jewel and JP. Gieselle are just stock with messed up parts.
