I love snakes, well I've never personally owned one, but I have pretty much the same story as Val. Whenever I was like seven we were all at my uncle's house and out in the driveway I found a red/black/white striped snake (never looked it up to see what it was) that was about 8-9" long. I thought it was cool, so I picked it up and carried it to my mom who ran away screaming while my dad snatched it out of my hand and threw it away. So I started crying cause I thought I was in trouble lol.

I hate hate hate spiders though. Can't stand 'em. At all. They freak me out, and its also the fact that Missouri has Tarantulas and Tennessee had Brown Recluses and Black Widows. And scorpions, which don't freak me out but I know they are dangerous so that freaks me out.

 

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I watched that show MonsterQuest on the History Channel last night. It was about monster snakes (Burmese pythons, Boa constrictors, King Cobras) in Florida. They came to the conclusion that burmese pythons are living wild in Florida and are also breeding in the wild. The Boas are definitely living in the wild, but they didn't find any evidence that they are breeding. Same with the King cobra!

 

That pretty much sums it up.. Plus I hate them.

Basically when I was like 5 or 6 years old my class went on a field trip to this place called "flick farm." This lady kept all kinds of exotic creatures like Monkeys, lizards, snakes, odd kinds of crazy livestock, stuff that wasn't normal at least to be in this part of the country or even in the US at all. Well, of course I was just a little kid and they brought out this giant ******* like 400' yellow python/boa/thing out and it was like 4 million times bigger than me, gave us no warning and it scared the living **** out of me. Ever since then I have hated snakes and always will.

 

Yeah i saw that too. It was a rerun but still interesting.

 

I also had a ball python when I was a kid...called him Monty. only got bit once when I was feeding him..he got sick and dies. good pets

 

Did you see the teeth on that ******* Burm when they had his mouth open? Looked like a shitstorm in someone's worst nightmare.

Its pretty much common knoweledge that you cant domesticate a rattle snake. And why would you want to?


Anyhow, Ive seen shitloads of poisonous snakes living here in florida. I will kill everyone that I see however I can. Smash it with a rock, hit it with a shovel, shoot it, whatever I have available. Domesticated snakes are really fun pets though. Had a buddy with some kind of python, not sure what type, but it was cool. Never bit me. His stepdad had a ******* 13 foot burmese though. Freaked me out a little when they would let it loose in the yard. Oh, and it smelled like Omega-****. Whatever that smells like.

No I was not raised in a hill billy combine or someting sorry I live in the country not hill billy country. No snake should ever be killed because it never did anything to you, so why kill it. why not just get away from it.

 

snakes can generally eat live mice without issue, however it is not unheared of for a mouse to get a lucky bite cut right through the snakes spine.

i just had him in a 20 gallon aquarium with the wire mesh top with clamps. he was maybe 2.5 feet long and deceptivly strong. i thought he escaped cause in the barracks i lived in the heater was all or nothing, so i would leave the door cracked open with the chain lock on to try to balance the temp. he got out and i figured he crawled away. he actually managed to get inside the rooms heater and got all bloaded, welled up 3 times his size and almost ripped open when i was trying to extract him with a coat hanger. The barracks had the walkways on the outside rather than a central indoors hallway. so once i got him out i flung him towards the dumpster 3 floors below, he hit the side of it and basically exploded.

it was actually pretty awesome.

Yeah he was huge. Leroy was eating 5 lb. live chickens/turkeys prolly the last 3 years before he died. It was actually pretty damn neat to watch him eat, you'd never think such a big snake could be so lightning fast. We'd put him in the back yard, throw the chicken or turkey back there n eventually the feathered fowl would get just a lil bit too close... and BAM! It was over!

 

That's disgusting! Poor thing.

Holy ****... chickens and turkeys? How often? That had to have gotten pretty expensive.


I got my new baby this weekend! Haven't named him, yet. He's about 1.5' long. He's a lot more docile than I expected him to be. We've held him a few times and he has came right out of his 'ball' quickly and started slithering around each time. Doesn't seem stressed out. I've seen him drink once, and he likes to roam the tank at night. He's pretty cool, and it's awesome to have a pet I don't have to feed every day!

He's spoiled. He came right out and started exploring when we put him in his tank. He's in a 30 gallon tall tank that has 4 hiding places, some slate rocks, a water dish, an under the tank heater on one side, some driftwood, some Aspen substrate and reptile carpet, two thermometers and a hygrometer inside the tank and a screen lid half covered with seran wrap to keep the humidity in the tank.

I'll try to take some pictures the next time we have him out. We only handle him for maybe 5-10 minutes a day.

 

Awesome!!! I love snakes, they're just so damn cool. Once he actually got big enough to eat the chickens and turkeys, we'd feed him one bout once every two or three weeks. If he'd eat em. Sometimes he would, sometimes he wouldn't. The times he wouldn't eat em, we'd just put the feathery critter inna pen for a week or two and try again. And not really expensive at all, you can get em pretty cheap from a feed store, or livestock place.

 

I was talking to some Fish and Game guys a while back. I heard them say some stuff about a huge python in a nearby lake and how they had been trying to locate it, but didn't want the public to know about it so they wouldn't be freaked out.

 

They are. I don't like venomous ones, though. I love watching my snake's body as he crawls around. The way their muscles move is awesome. They feel so luxorious, too. Smooth, clean, and shiny. They are cool.

I was thinking you had to feed those big-*** Burms more often than the common 'once every 3 weeks' it is for Ball pythons. At least it wasn't expensive. Would he have eaten the frozen/thawed ones from a grocery store?

That is most definitely a Burmese python. Ball pythons normally don't grow any larger than 6'. They should tell the public because loose/wild Burmese pythons are a nuisance and they are dangerous. They can eat raccoons, dogs, hell, even small children when they are fully grown. Last thing they need is for that thing to get on land, eat a kid, and then the public find out they knew about it and didn't do anything to warn people.


Oh, I also forgot to mention that my snake is already trained to eat frozen/thawed fuzzy mice. I am SO happy about that. I can go to the pet store and buy them frozen. Now I don't have to feel bad about feeding him. The boyfriend is going on a 4 day fishing trip soon and I was worried I'd have to feed the snake a live fuzzy while he was gone.

 

LOL no, we tried once and he wouldn't touch it. And you gotta think, the meal he was eating was proportional to what you would feed your snake with its size. So usually every 2 or 3 weeks was still fine. Get them pics up chica!

 

Wouldn't that be weird? Going to a grocery store, buying like 6 frozen turkeys and telling the cashier "yeah, they're for my snake". Hahaha. I wasn't even thinking about the proportions of them. I know with *****, they say to feed the snake prey which is no larger than its widest point.

I will try to get some pictures up. I got a new camera. I am still learning to use it and the software. I can't wait to try it out, and this will be a fun venture trying to get that little ****** to stay still!

 

Update: I finally named the snake! His name is "Mr. Bones" or "Bones" for short.
