Cool Will a 5.4 motor fit in my gt?

I was wondering... Once the Track opens back up in Feb... I plan on doing a lot of racing...(legally) So I'm pretty sure I'm gonna eventually blow my lil 4.6 sohc motor.... Will 2003 lightning motor fit in my 2001 gt?

Just curious thanks

Yes, but you will have to use a un godly cowl hood or a open top hoos(edit, what the hell is a hoos? haha: HOOD) like a guy I know, due to the higher deck hight in the 5.4. Remember this though, anything you want to do with a 5.4 can be done with a 4.6, with less headache. Forge a 4.6, add a turbo or what ever( I love turbos and consider them the top of the food chain) and call it a day, your 4.6 block can handle more HP and TQ then you will ever think of making.

In short yes it will fit. i have seen it done in person.

also think 2000 Cobra R 5.4 32v motor. but you will need a bigger hood then the cobra r hood as it has a custom intake manifold made that was lower than the truck intake setup.

I have seen it to, but man, without the Cobra R intake, which we know is impossible to get, your talking about a HUGE hood cowl or cutout, there is a couple sheetmetal intakes out there for this , like the one from MMR, but really, he doesn't need this headache. I say concentrate on building the 2v 4.6, a amazing combo if done right.

There was an article in 5.0 Magazine I believe where they just swapped the bottom end of a 5.4 and made adapter plates for the 4.6 intake. Its possible, but with the money you spend making it work, you could just build a forged 4.6 and either turbo or supercharge it. Good luck,
Matt

Thanks guys.. I was just curious...
This is after all the first Ford I've ever owned....
(and in the family)

So how do I go about modifiying my lil sohc 4.6?
Where do I start?
It already has a flowmaster catback and
K&N air filter....
Not sure where to start....
Thanks in advance!

Everything you have is minimal. First you have to decide on what you want to accomplish. A forged bottom end, will support anything you throw at it. How much money are you looking at spending? You need ti decide on what power adder you want, they all make great power, with the turbo being the top dog. It's up to you.

I was thinking... I do like having a low compression ratio... (stock I think it's 9:4.1) So I guess that would leave no other choice than to turbo it or am I missing somthing?

Nah, your not missing anything, your right, but figure out what you want to do, a nice venom kit can get you faster than most everything on the road, you can forge it and throw everything on the market at it, with no worries. it depends on what you what to do.

One quick thing... with the larger 5.4L engine wouldn't he get considerably more low end torque? I have seen the dyno of my friends 5.7L GTO at work... it's almost a perfectly flat torque curve... above about 2k RPMs it levels out... that's a TON of low end power for accelerating off the line.

The 5.4L should theoretically give you more "potential". You just have to decide how far you're going. Are you stopping at 400HP... or are you aiming for 1200?

well, yes with the .8 more litres, you are going to have more torque. If it were me, Id still just build the 4.6 and strap a kenne bell blower to it and watch my flat torque curve...

THe 5.4 will make more power, displacement is displacement, but the 4.6 can make more power than anyone needs, with no swap headaches.

But if he wants a 5.4 he can do that is the question. but i agree why not just mod the 4.6? if you really want some displacment just get a v10 they fit into the chasse as well.

HAha yeah, seeing that the v10 they crammed into the boss 351 isn't anywhere near the same as the excursion v10, which really can't be used at all, I mean I am sure with some fabricating you could do it, but in reality , it's just way too big. You want a v10 from a boss 351? You have a better shot at getting three 00 Cobra R's Your 4.6 is a stout foundation to start with, it's basicly like starting with a Dart or A4 block when building a 302. Which basicly means if you build it right, you can throw everything you have at it and it will take it.

When I say fabricating I mean in all aspects

Yeah I know, but it's well out of the realm of your average backyard Mechanic, trust me when I tell you that for intents and purposes, it's not doable. You seem to know an awful lot, how many modular setups have you built? I myself have worked on and built over 20 and thats Modulars, not even counting pushrod setups. I think if your going to give out advise on building somthing, you should have done it already. Even considering a v10 swap is just plain stupid. Silver State Motorsports did it, for bragging rights. John Mihovitz runs 6's with a built Cobra longblock, I have yet to see anyone run that fast with a v10. One main reason, try to find forged internals for them, for high HP applications, I have never seen not one place that sells them, not saying they don't exist, but they are not plentiful by any stretch of the imagination.

depending on what you feel like and what your budget is I like the 5.4 swap. But you could also just punch out your 4.6 to a 5.1 Street Fighter I beleive Coast High Performance makes that kit. it's only .3 liters less and you could make gobs of power. Not to mention more low end but hey you punch out that 4.6 to a 5.1 and then strap on a huffer or hairdryer and watch out.

Don't really need to punch anything out, just forge it and bolt up a nice turbo kit, one of my customers www.turbochargedpower.com is doing pretty well with the standard bore stroke combos. They primarily do twin turbo kits for the modulars, with excellent results.
