Sorry guys but believe it or not a well driven SRT-4 will be a driver race in the 1/4 with a well driven GT 99-04 GT and will whip a NPI GT.
By no means are they nice or better than a stang but dont underestimate them.

Dodge is (sort of) American muscle
Although its no longer just Mopar ("Daimler/Chrysler just aint the same), its not really rice, either - though the body style mutters "rice" rather loudly.
I drove the neon, er, SRT-4, and its a fine car - I just don't fit in it (over six feet of none-too-flexible 230# 52 year old Georgian). After wedging behind the wheel, there's not denying it could run with the big dogs. Felt a tiny bit quicker of the line than my 300rwhp GT - as it well should, since it weighs about 450# less. My overall impression was that it would give a new GT competition on the street, and lose by a nose at the track. It actually felt stronger and tighter to me than the Subaru WRX - which I consider one of its prime competitors.
At $21k plus tax, it was a good (but not overpowering) buy. Good value.
Body styling left me cold. Plain as a mud hen, in my view.
Cheap feeling interior, with tinny ambiance.
Small in and out. I could never own one for that reason alone.
Assuming you fit in the thing, I would immediately add the $3,500 upgrade kit - that would keep you competitive with most cars costing far more (Subaru WRX, Acura, etc, etc).
Could make one dynamite sleeper with just a little effort. Wonder how hard it would be to retrofit neon bumper covers and get rid of that hideous wing?
Be kind of a hit to haunt the ricer cruizes with neon-ized SRT-4 with about $6000 in mods....
My problem is I just don't trust the lifespan of any power-adder that is spinning merrily away at 14000 rpm directly downstream of every bit of carbon and rust that a motor might cough up...

OMFG SOMEONE BAN THIS GOD DAMN THREAD

Ok, this has gotten outta hand, so its going away for now. Another thing, for those that make the comment, "if you want a neon, get outta the forums," let this be a warning. This forums has never had an issue with people being welcome. I think of us all as a tight nit group. Do NOT take it upon yourself to say things like that, as I dont care what you drive, as long as you dont cause trouble or take away from the site, you are fine with me. Yes, its a neon, No, I wouldnt drive one, but like they said, pull your head outta youre butt and realize that you are in the age of cars that something like a neon MAY occasionally be faster than our MUSTANGS!!! Technology makes up for the 30 year old platform that weve been driving around like its the fastest thing on the road. Give it up. Hope I didnt step on too many toes, but this has gotten rediculous. The guy asked for an honest opinion, but got attacked. We are all just here to have a good time. Lets keep it trouble free, we have what I think as the best forum on the net as far as trouble makers go. Lets keep it that way.
