These huge fires don't happen all the time. Sometimes we have mild wildfires, but something on this scale doesn't happen every year. A lot of the times, these fires are started by some dipsh*t.

These big fires are rare

The fires are all due to a dirty smoker, smoking in an area where it was clearly perma-bant.
He will be fined.
His children will be removed.
The news will exploit.
The people will be happy.
The Californians will go back to being Californians, facing their toughest problems of the day in supermarket aisles.

speaking of FL and the hurricanes...after we got hit hard that one yr insurance companies started dropping policies like mad. anyone hear of insurance companies droppin' ppl in cali? from what i've seen not having fire coverage in cali is like not having flood insurance in a state that's barely above sea level.

Good luck to all our members in Ca. Those fires are insane and the destruction is rediculous. Fires have always been a concern out there. I lived in SD in 1993 when the place just about went up in flames, though not nearly as bad as you all have it this time around.
While I know they will, it is hard to believe that the place will be re-built....1800 homes destroyed is a lot.
This is what happens when you add years of near-draught conditions on top of housing explosions in the high-desert areas which have been hit the hardest. Those are also areas which have the most wind.
In the comming weeks we will hear all the other stories....such as the business that will suffer too. But, soon enough, there will be construction jobs galore and all those homes will get re-built.
As far as fire insurance goes, how is it that someone can not be insured. I don't understand that. If you have a mortage, you have to have insurance and I am sure that 99% of the houses out there have mortgages. What am I missing?

You can't get a mortgage w/o fire insurance. If you cancel your fire insurance, your house can get re-possesed. Maybe some areas of california are different because of the huge risk of fires out there....I am not sure.
My house has insurance. They don't break out the difference of fire insurance or not. It just all falls under hazard insurance.
If someone does not have insurance, it is hard for me to feel sorry for them. People have no business buying a house if they can't afford insurance unless you are self insured which may be the case with some of the most wealthy.
If you live in Florida or TX it is the same with hurricane insurance. It costs a lot, but you pretty much have to have it.
There are certainly potential hazards no matter where you live, but never have we seen 1800 homes destroyed in one event except for maybe Katrina.
It will be interesting to see how the Hollywood crowd will step up to help.
