Registration questions
Hey folks!
Ok, here is the issue.
My girlfriend has a POS kia that we might be able to unload tonight or tomorrow. Got a couple of very interested buyers and the 2nd one is almsot a sure thing if the first buyer doesent buy it.
I recently got an 02 Saturn, it is registered in my name and i got the plates a little over a month ago. It cost me about 90 bucks to register.
My girlfriends birthday is coming up next weekend, since she will not have the kia anymore i want to sign the car over to her as a gift which means no taxes in colorado.
However, i just got it registered and it is good to go for 10 months. If i sign it over to her, does the term of the registration get carried over? would she only have to pay a percentage of the registration since it is already registered? or will she just have to cough up 90 bucks to get it in her name?
I know laws differ from state to state, but i was curious if anyone has done something like this.
Thanks!

Call the law offices of F SCOTT FARREN and tell them YOU mean business,, LOL. But seriously 90 buck for registration is highway robbery. Only cost like 20 bucks here I think. She can still drive it in your name till next register.. Long as you don't report it stolen or anything..

Depends on the sate. In some states, if you keep the plates on the car, she will only have to pay a pro-rated rate. But, I think most places make you pay for the new registration.
BTW, I wonder if you could give it to her, w/o signing it over. G/f's don't last and you would not be the first person on this site who did something like this only to regret it later.

i would keep the car in your name and just "give" it to her as a gift, but dont take your name off it, who knows what the future holds. she can drive a car registered in someone else's name. I've done for years, my dad gets ford A plan, but i dont, so he "buys" the car in name only, and I finance it.

RebelYell, 90 bucks aint too bad. My honda cost me 24 bucks to register, my stang cost me 450 the first year and 345 the next. im hoping for somewhere around 220-230 this year.
My buddy paid 720 for registration on his 05 Ram 1500 Hemi

Just type up a letter that has yours and hers DL on it stating that she has permission to operate the vehicle. You both sign it.
Have her keep it in the glove box in case she is pulled over.
That way if you ever break up, the car returns to you.
Problem solved.

i fully intend on giving her this car. I still have the mustang and my honda.
i just dont want her to have to cough up 90 bucks for registration when io already paid it up for a full year.

dont think there is any way around it jack....question.....why sign it over to her? why not just give her the keys and be done with it? like ya said...shes the one...so what diff does it make whose name the car is under? that way you dont have to do a thing...just add her to your insurance

Hey man, I forgot you guys had a child together. That being the case, you are really locked for life more with the kid and the car is kind of a much smaller thing anyway.
While none of my business, hopefully you have the type of relationship where you can get married at some point then all the other crap won't matter.

well, i really think she is the one for me. Im crazy about her and she feels the same towards me, however, we have only been together less than a year. Her selling the Kia was my idea once we got the saturn cause we dont need 4 cars and the Kia is the most unreliable and ugliest of the bunch. but she was a bit nervous about it since that was her only car. If we did split up she would be worried to have no transportation and 2 kids. (Of course i would want full custody, but realistically she would get custody as well) more than anything it is the gesture of making sure she is taken care of, and to help alleviate any uncertainty about the future. I would rather she left me than feel she has to stay with me because she has no car and cant afford the kids on her own, that isnt the right reason to be together.
i think ill just sign it, let her sign it, then she can fill in the date whenever she wants.

Honestly the only time i ever got sick of her is for a brief period at the Childrens Hospital while we were there for over a week with Logan after he was born. That is just cause we were so stressed. Every time i see her my heart smiles. lol

I think that evey couple before they get married should try doing wallpaper together first. It's a great test and if you can survive that w/o killing eachother, then you are set for life - lol

LOL....you know, if your relationship can survive hanging wallpaper together, I think you can survive anything. My wife and I have been through some tuff ****, but wallpaper was one of the hardest.

our son is back at Childrens Hospital. We left there on sunday which was her birthday. If we diddnt take him up he would not have survived the night. His mytral valve is leaking enough that it swelled his left ventrical 3 times its normal size, his lungs were filling with fluid and his ventrical was pinching one of the bronchial tubes. He is still there, drugged up with a breathing tube and various other IV's and tubes running in and out of him. he already had to have a blood transfusion cause his blood got so acidic.
they were gonna push his surgury out 6-8 months, they dont know if they can do that anymore, he might have to get his heart worked on within the next week or so if he doesent improve.
i just now, 20 seconds ago heared that they have dropped the intake on the airtube and he is responding well and they plan to run a tube to his stomache to try to give him some food rather than just nutrients and stuff from an IV.
so between the time he was born 2 months ago and the weeklong hosptial stay once they discovered his heart problem, and yesterday and last night there were 4 times where i diddnt think he would make it.
this is really heavy and extremly difficult, but were both being strong.
