Default For anyone in their late 30's and over age wise..

I'm 47 yrs old this month. Getting a lot of aches and pains from working in a factory all day. I need to start some muscle training cause the things I used to lift when I was young are getting tough on my old ***.. I'm trying to keep my stamina while building up the muscle we all lose as we age, (believe me when you hit 47 you will lose muscle mass). I don't like free weights cause I aint sure when something will just give out.. ( elbow, shoulder, knee.. all the usual suspects.

Was looking at a bowflex system or something like that.. Anyone else use something like that to build yourself up. I get plenty of cardio from walking to and from my work areas, I just need to bulk up like I used to be 20 years ago..

To help out your bones and the rest of your body...go buy yourself a bucket of whey protein..

Extra energy.. I'd recommend creatine and this stuff called "No - Xplode"

Creatine basically retains water in your muscles, it also gives you energy. No Xplode just adds to it.

You can get all three at a GNC for about 100 bucks total.

As for the bowflex..it works, but I'd recommend the machines at the gym.. and screw the benchpress.. use dumbells..simple curls ect..not as intense as benchpressing, builds your arms more then your chest..

Just do an enrollment at a smaller gym, they normally offer like..3 free training sessions, tell the trainer what you want.

I'm a young guy, but I'm in shape. My cousin just hit 30..hes in better shape then what most guys are when they are my age.. my dad is 43..a construction worker.. and is in fairly decent shape now..hes had his shoulder go out, his back go out, his elbow go out, and his hip go out..all on the same side..but..theres other reasons then that.

Hes been fine for about a year now..and is now in decent shape. If you are concerned about your legs ect.. at the gym they've got bikes and machines that help your legs out..

I'm 53, and have been training for 25+ years. You should have never stopped lifting in the first place LOL!
I still use free weights only, and am injury free, except for a minor ache here and there.
I never used any of those newer machines, but if you are out of shape anything you use will work for a period of time.
I haven't lost any muscle mass, if anything I've gained some over the last 2 years.
My arms are at 19" and I bench 315 for 5 reps, so don't think that you can't keep it or re-acquire it at your age.
If you want to spend $1000-$1500 on a bowflex go ahead, but I'd invest in a 300lb Olympic barbell set for $150 and a nice bench, $200, and a couple pairs of cast iron dumbells for $100.
Just start easy and you won't get hurt and you'll be surprised at how fast you'll progress.

Hey bro, it comes with hammerin' the weights for almost 3 decades.
Keep at it, your size and strength will come, but I've learned that nutrition and rest is even more important then training.
At your young age, if you find that your weights and size aren't going up, your diet is off, and you are not recovering enough.
I only do 5-6 working sets per muscle, and when I started doing that I grew.
When I was much younger I'd do 15 sets per muscle, and nothing happened. Cut back, get at least your bodyweight in grams of protein, if you weigh 200, get 200 grams of protein, and shoot for at least 4500 calories a day, spread out over 6 meals or 4 meals and 2 shakes.

I hear ya bro.. I been aching and paining since I was 40. All those old injuries come back to life.. (especialy old bone breaks), I usually take a few goody pwders and all is fine .

Thanks for all the advice guys. i do lift the 12 ounce weights too. but I'm gonna get something that me and my son can both use. I've seen some cheaper versions of bowflex and weight resistance machines. I just gotta get back into the lifting stuff part of my job. I still got at least 20 more years before I can retire and live happily ever after..

i can do 225 twice on bench. I know its not much but i could hardly bench 135 last year. I can do 460 on squat twice too. All i take is NO xplode, and cellmass. I do have a multi-vitamin pack from GNC but i dont always get around to taking those.

two people have mentioned NO-Explode....can you guys tell me how it works cause my neighbor gave me a bottle of it since he doesn't work out anymore and I do at least 4 times a week. Does it make your heart rate increase?

Its opens the blood vessels which in turn makes your blood flow faster. Better pumps, muscles fill with more blood and nutrients. I personally dont see a change in heart rate unless im lifting, but thats from lifting. As long as you follow the directions you should be fine.

Whatever is in it..forgot what does widen up your blood vessels .. it causes whatever your working out to..get swollen since this happens you can increase your reps and your strength.

There is creatine mixed in with it which basically retains water.. it helps increase your size..

For anyone that is taking supplements and working out.. you need whey protein.. bodybuilders..anyone who lifts or plays sports lives by it.

And for you old fellas goin "WE DIDNT HAVE NONE OF THAT **** BACK IN OUR DAY PLAYIN FOOTBALL" well.. welcome to the new times..where everything can be increased by a powder, or pill, or supplement.

when i was takin N OH xplod i would take it at 330 hit the gym about 30-45 minutes later and i would still be wired at 11 pm. that stuff kept me awake, its better to use for morning workouts not evening. if i remember right there is a azz of taurine, some nitric and a little bit of creatine. i didnt take supplents for about 3 months didnt gain weight or get any stronger. some freinds gave me No2 and i gained 5 pounds in 2 months but i went from 70 pound dumbell press to 95 pound dumbell presses. ima a hard gainer and i lifted for strength. its too bad i got hurt in january air force put me on a profile for a month, no physical activity. then once i got off of that i broke my hand at work, still healing from that injury. so 5 months no gym me loose 7 pounds and i doubt i could even break the 205 bench press mark. i was maxin at 235, i was tryin hard to get my bench back at 250. i drink too much though. its tough pushin weight when you only weigh 155 pounds.

NO xplode is the best for 5:45 in the morning workouts. Get home about 7. Eat some muscle oats and some bolthouse farms perfectly protien Mocha drink. then hit the shower and be back at school by 8.

HA HA Welcome aboard the 40 + ship. My wife didn't believe me till she hit 42, and all I can sayis "i told ya so" Most of my pains are probably concrete floor, steel toed boots related, but I can't blame anyone but me and age for not being able to lift more than 100 pounds repeatedly( by that I mean sometimes lifting over 100 lbs 40 times or more) over an 8 hour shift. I gotta get back in shape, and not stop my bad habits..ie. drinking, smoking, eating BBQ ribs, and all the other stuff that will probably kill me.. LOL.

Oh and BTW way I'm 5' 9" @ 180 lbs. Been that way since 1997. weighed almost 198 bout 10 years ago.. My weight hasn't fluctuated much in the last 10 years.. I gain a lb or 2 then lose lb or 2

Eh..expect to lose the fat and gain the muscle.. I'd say you'd be around...210 in a year after a decent workout schedule.

I'm 5'10 and 18. My freshman year I was 145 sophomore 165 junior 130 senior 155 and been that way since.

My weight fluctuated mainly because I wrestled.. and I bumped to whatever weight class I felt like taking.. sophomore year I messed my back up bad..year of no working out, no sports.. senior year i started lifting a little bit..

I'm one of those guys that can eat out 3 times a day, every day, and not gain a pound. Its when I work out that I actually gain weight. (and yes, i do eat out every day..my dad and i don't cook.)

Thanks for all the replies on this. i guess there aint no quick fix to build strength. Other than steroidal type stuff. I should probably just exercise more and do some good old fashioned pushups and pullups. They're free.

I also mentioned that I weighed 198 10 years ago. Actually that was 15 years ago, before I had my bout with cancer. When I was finally diagnosed and started treatments I weighed 145 and I think that's where most of my body mass went.. Never really got the muscle tone back after the chemo. Plus I lost some hearing and I got a bunch of scar tissue from surgeries, Anyway I'm gonna get my muscle strength back. I can't afford not too..
