Difference between Mustang V6 and Other Cars

i have one question. ive got a V6 mustang with about 200 horses, its a 2000.my friend just got a mitsubishi eclipse (06) and its also a V6, but only like a 2 something liter, but stock is 263 horses. my question is, whats his car got that i dont. is there anything i can do to give a V6 more power?

There's a few key things about the way that eclipse's V6 operates that gives it more power than your Mustang's V6.

1. Your V6 is a pushrod engine, meaning it has a single camshaft and only 2 valves per cylinder. The mitsubishi V6 is DOHC, which among other things means that it has 4 valves per cylinder. More valves=better airflow, which in turn means more power.

2. The mitsubishi motor has a higher compression ratio than your Mustang's V6.

3. The stroke of the mitsubishi V6 is undoubtedly shorter than your Mustang's, which means it can rev faster and have a higher redline.

Keep in mind that this is all lamens terms, and that the cliff notes is your Mustang is using engine technology dating back to the 50s, while the Eclipse's engine is much more up to date and efficient.

The only way to get real power with your V6 is either going to be a wet nitrous kit or a turbocharger.

Incorrect, his v6 is the same size as yours (3.8) but has all new technology, like CCM said.
It has DOHC, Variable valve timing (basically vtec), and operates at a higher RPM...
And FWD... yeah, the new eclipse GT v6 is fubar'ed compared to 95-99... would have been a damn nice time to return to AWD

so is the engine really the only thing that makes that huge 60 hp jump? i know i could put a v8 in my car but that would cost a fortune changing everything else to fit it and paying the mechanic an arm and both legs, but would if be possible to drop a new V6 engine in it? but not a new 2006 mustang engine either, cause it still isnt much more horsepower. i mean like an engine from a completely different car that wouldnt require change much else in my car?

That would be like ripping the heart out of a true mustang, and the engine is what makes it what it is kinda. It would be more power, and im not bashing you, but its like in tokyo drift when they put a 350Z engine in the ol' stang, you know? I too feel bad knowing that we have more literage than eclipses and even new V6 chargers, but 60 or less HP.......:shakeno: thats the way it is unless you really shake stuff up with the engine haha

GREG@SN95 03-03-2007 03:45 PM

the v6 in the 06 mustang makes more HP then the 302 in the sn95s...

so if you can find a cheap v6 out of an s197... go for it...

Nissan 350z engines are 3.5 liters and they are pushing 310 stock now.

People don't buy V-6 Mustangs because they are fast, so don't get too wrapped-up around the axle on being slower then a few cars out there.

Also, you will notice that while there are a lot of small displacement motors making big power, the torque generally sucks-ass. hp can not tell the whole story.

I had an Eclipse Spider when I was working in LA a few weeks ago as a rental. It was 4 cyl and was embarrassing as far as power is concerned. Holy shit, every mini-van on the planet was faster that that peice of crap.

I was shocked at how nice the car looked and how crappy it accelerated. Hope the 6-ers are better.

I bought my first mustang (1995 v6) to learn 5 spd, rwd, fun little car, 3 grand, and it looked so damn sexy when I was done with it lol.

I had a 98 eclipse before i bought the stang. It was just the GS model and it had like 150hp. It was slow, but it was a nice little car with great gas mileage. They need to return to the AWD turbo days. At the last car show I was at they had a prototype of the new eclipse with a race package installed. It had huge breaks, a body kit that was actually useful and looked good, and also had a beefed up EVO engine in it. I would have taken it. To bad it will never be made.
