I think 50 - 75 is pretty average. But, one thing you are missing is how long it takes to get the job done. It is entirely possible for a shop that charges $40 an hour to be more expensive then a shop that charges $80 an hour, so keep that in mind if it takes them twice as long to get the job done.
I have had a lot of work done at CJ Pony in Harrisburg. Their labor rate is really good at $55 and they can always tell you in advance as near as possible what a job will run becaus ethey have done everything possibel you can think of to a stang...so, no surprises.
Some shops just give you an hourly rate, but if they stumble around, you can end up paying for their time.
Best bet is to get an estimate in writing in advance. Determine what is fair and at what point you owe them more money. Sometimes things go wrong. A bolt is frozen and breaks-off....that might be your fault. Maybe the lift was not working properly.....you should not have to pay for that.
