Oh, you have an automatic....
I am so tired of hearing, "you shoulda got a stick". When someone checks out my car, the first thing they do is look inside to see if its a stick or not. But when i am driving the car everyone thinks its a stick. WTF. Do people think just because your car is an automatic that it is slow? Or do they think they can beat you because the transmission is robbing so much hp?

yeah I never understood either...I always get comments like "is it a manual?" "yeah" "good, because if it was auto i'd have to laugh at you"
always some **** like that...I think the general public accosiates manual with sports/muscle car...and they consider auto's for pussies or some ****...who knows, who cares..I'm sure none of em who told u that drive anything near as nice as your mustang

Many ppl think autos are significantly slower (like more than a full sec slower in the 1/4) than their manual counterparts, though the differences in the two are only marginal. Those ppl who don't know what they're talking about usually think automatic = slow.

I love manuals cause the chicks always ask, what's the stick for, and i'm like..it for changing gears..and they start playing with it, and ask "can you show me how to use it"...I respond with the usual.."maybe a little later"..

people tell me this allllll the time about being an auto. I HATE it. My good friend absolutely loves driving stick, and he wishes I had stick, but after a few rides I don't think he really cares, cuz he realizes how fun/fast an auto can be.
Also, I love having an auto... nothing better than beating cars with my left arm hanging out the window.

I would say I prefer stick bc...
1) It requires more skill on the driver's part, so if you beat an auto of equal hp, you get a feeling of accomplishment
2) the adrenaline you get at high speeds, throwing each gear, is fun as hell to see how fast I can shift. Imagine MCM's video inside his car shifting if he had an auto. Nobody would care to see him floor it and his auto shift for itself.
3) the ability to downshift whenever you want, and then upshift at your preferred rpm. Autos base shifting on how much you have the pedal down
4) autos cost more than a manual of equal year, type, etc
5) 5 gears gives you more options to downshift into, and get you to a better powerband
6) And the little things, like you said, when people see my car is stick they're like, "awesome" and i guarantee if i had auto, theyd be like "oh man...."
autos are very nice for easy daily driving, consistent 1/4 mile times, and really high powered cars(cars with 600+rwhp have massively heavy clutches), but when it comes to driving on the street and having fun, stick gives a better experience than putting it in drive and letting the tranny to all the work

I don't like Ford auto's cause I had the 4R70W in my 4.6 t-bird and had to have it replaced 3 times cause if failed under the power...I got rid of the car JUST because it had an auto in it, and I did take all the precautions to protect it too. Cooler, shift kit...etc. It still failed. Because of this I will NEVER get an auto again unless I have to for medical reasons or something. I dont knock auto's anyway...some of the fastest drag cars have to clutch...so saying an auto is slow just cause its an auto is ignorant.

I dont understand why driving a stick is such a cool thing to some people. Especially kids in high school. Its so funny to me when a kid gets a new car, and people are like, yo dude is it a stick? And their like yeah man its a stick its sweet. Dont get me wrong, I love having a 5 speed in my mustang and its fun as hell. Its just not a big deal to me that it is one. I dont go up to kids at school and be like. I got a mustang and the best part is that it is a stick. I learned to drive a manual when I was like 13 on my dads fleet of F450 and superduty dumptrucks. I dont even think about it when im driving a manual anymore. Anyway this thread just made me think of the kids in my school with their stick cars.

yeah, I'm definitely quiet about my car. Nobody even knows I have a mustang unless they ask. Same with if its stick or auto. I'll never brag about my car being stick, or being fast bc its a stick. There are plenty of guys just on these boards who have autos and would whoop me. I respect autos, but in a sports car, I'll always get stick

yea...i have to agree
the next sports car i get will be a stick no matter what...i made a mistake on getting an auto but with my SCT chip i am just as fast as a stock manual six so it took a matter of 250 bucks to get to the level of a stick in my auto

those are the 2 reasons I wish I had a 5-spd. But other then that I dont mind my auto. Oh yeah and 5-spds sound better in my opinion since you can hang in gear longer especially while slowing down. I love that sound. I have to take overdrive off to replicate it. My next car (if a sports car) will not be an auto. I just need to learn to drive a manual better. And I dont catch alot of the auto vs manual stuff. I get it sometimes but not often. I agree with them most of the time, I wish I had gotten a 5-spd, one thing I would change if I could go back.

I get crap for having an auto but like aforementioned, its always from people that drive a sh*tbox. Sure, I'd love to have a 5 spd, but this is the car I wanted and I don't regret buying an auto. The "auto" comments still aren't as bad as the "why doesn't it have a 5.0 in it?" question.:censored:

I get that crap too from time to time.
You can suprise the **** out of them if you have 4:10's though. Ill pull out of the neighborhood and get about 12mph where the car shifts into second gear. Ill romp on it, it shifts back to first and ****in breaks loose and flys, hits 2nd gear and snaps thier head back and will chirp on a colder day, hits 3rd and pulls hard. By then im going 60-70 and that usually shuts them up.
I'd love to see how this car feels a mile down at sea level. I bet she breaks loose all the time.
most people are used to econoboxes. The automatic transmission on those was designed for ultimate economy, not performance. So yeah, the auto's are quite a bit slower than the manuals cause those auto trannys dont know how to play. They just wanna save gas and get up a hill or two.
mustang auto's have a performance transmission that really isnt designed to give two flying monkey ****s about gas. And most people just dont understand that.
If i end up getting another stang, it will definatly be stick. This is the first auto ive had, and while i'm damn impressed with its performance, for me it is just not as much fun. I got mine new in late 2004, got about 8k of sticker price. The only manual's they had were the V6's and i really wanted the 8.

Anyway, the reason people all these kids are running around thinking a car ain't worth they're time unless it has a stick is because the only thing they know about cars they learned from Fast and the Furious. IMO, having a stick is only important if you drive an import and are big into the rice scene. Muscle cars have had autos since the beginning and only recently have a bunch of 16 year old punkasses that think they no **** about cars started complaining about it.
Despite saying all of this, I admit that I'm swapping my auto for a T56. Mostly because I think stick is more fun to drive, but also for the sound. I don't want to get exhaust for my car until I've got the gears to make it roar.
#26
I get the same exact thing, but only from younger guys that are usually still in high school, or a local ricer. I also have a Hyundai Sonata that I drive when gas prices get like they are and it has a SPORT SHIFTER...that one always gets people!! They are always like WTF, your cars a manual without a clutch??? I lose it everytime! :wallbash: Manual transmissions are fun to drive, but it can't beat having an automatic: Automatic=1 free hand+Girlfriend next to you= I like having a free hand sometimes!!

I never hated the auto, though. It certanly had its advantages. I just wanted something different.
