RIP Scott Geoffrion
Scott Geoffrion, a former Pro Stock star and nine-time NHRA winner, died Monday in southern California. He was 40.
Geoffrion was hospitalized Sunday night with breathing problems and a fever. The NHRA reported the cause of death as an apparent heart attack.
Geoffrion teamed with Darrell Alderman to form the feared "Dodge Boys" Pro Stock team in the early 1990s. He was twice the runner-up in division standings (1992, '94) and reached the final round 28 times in his career. He scored his final victory at Topeka in 1997.
"Scott was a great racer in his own right and always a tremendous supporter of our racing program, but more importantly, he was a great friend with a huge heart," said Pro Stock driver Kurt Johnson, whose father, Warren, fielded entries for Geoffrion early in his career. "They say you only need five good friends throughout your life, like the fingers on one hand. Scott was definitely one of my five, so it's like I've lost a finger. We're certainly going to miss him."
Geoffrion is survived by two children, a brother and sister, and his parents. A funeral is scheduled May 16 in Mahwah, N.J.
I met Scott in the early 90's and he was a straight up guy, who loved his fans, even after the ugly scandal that went down with teammate Darrel Alderman. And the big mystery "who trashed the dodge boys shop", causing millions in damages and basically writing off the dodge boys. Then Darrel getting busted for cocaine possession.. Scott was the innocent bystander in all that. Good guys finish last I guess. And only the good die young.. RIP Scott..
