Any of you smokers manage to quit?

Hey folks. Im 29 and been smoking since i was 17. So. 12 years now ive been smoking. And i wanna quit, i do the typical on off thing where i fall off the wagon.

Any of you smoke for 10+ years and manage to quit? Any tips? Normally i just go cold turkey, ive managed to quit for a few months here and there. Longest i went was 4 months, but my girl couldnt quit and she started smellin like cigs so i just started again so i wasnt kissin the perverbial ashtray.

Last couple attempts i have bombed miserably.

How did you quit? Or have you been able to?

Oh yah, and to everyone who doesent smoke, for christs sake, DONT start. Seriously. Each time i manage to quit for a month or so i start feeling awesome. More energy, better mood, i feel great. Then i go back to smoking and start feeling like crap again. Do yerself a favor and DONT START.

they got a smoking ban that will take effect in a month or two. I wanna quit before that cause i dont want to think the only reason i quit is cause some ****ing hippy lobbiest thinks they need to make my decisions for me.

im rambling......

Badfish 05-01-2006 03:29 PM

Badfish 05-01-2006 03:29 PM

ROFL, do yerself a favor and quit now. it will be much easier than quitting later. the longer you go the harder it gets, Besides, its gonna be banned everywhere sooner or later. Denver will be a very tence place on the 4th of july. the ban goes into effect on jul 1st. gonna be a lotta fights. lol

It becomes to embedded with yout daily routine and mannorisms that trying to quit feels like writing and entire 10 page term paper with no punctuation. it just seems wrong not to smoke, even if you want to quit.

thats the truth. Nobody pressured me to do it, i just kinda started on my own. everyone else was doing it. kind of a passive peer pressure.

ill try to find a pic, none of those are digi though. and my parents diddnt take many pictures of me back then. LOL. i think i embarassed them. anyways, if i find one ill try to get a good digi of it and ill post it. lol

RedFirevert04GT 05-01-2006 05:32 PM

It sucks trying to quit. I'm in the exact same situation. 29 now and started at 17. Smoked a pack a day for 12 years now. I tried the patch twice and cold turkey once. I'm going to try smoking cessation classes at work and if that doesn't work, here comes the hypnotist.

agreed!

I haven't smoked in a while. I started last fall off and on. I never found myself addicted to them though. It was more or a social thing where I would smoke when I was with certain friends.

GREG@94GT 05-01-2006 07:27 PM

i was smokin for a few months...

i just decided i didnt want to do it anymore and quit...

If ya wanna quit then ya REALLY HAVE TO WANT TO...

If you want to then it shouldnt be a problem...

personally, I dont get addicted to tobacco/ nicotine...

I have been chewin tobaco since sophmor year... so thats 4 years... 2 summers ago it got old and i didnt buy it for the whole summer... then a new flavor came out, lol...

If ya want to quit then just do it... dont buy ciggerettes and dont smoke em... it all comes down to self control... if you cant control yourself and keep yourself from smoking, then ya shouldnt be allowed to drive a car...

best of luck to ya bud :beerchug:
ya'll do ok

WaterDR 05-01-2006 07:48 PM

Smoking is a nasty, horrible, money-wasting habit.

Most people that I know who have quite, have done so cold turkey. It is the only way that works.

For you young studs who are just starting, quit while you can. If I were you I would spend some time touring a cancer ward and see what it is like to wear a morphine pump until you are dead.

My younger brother is an Oncologist at Mayo Clinic. My other brother picked-up smoking recently and my doc bro sent him video of him telling people that they are gonna die from lung cancer. The ones with the young children are particularly disturbing. Yea, it is real fun watching them cry knowing that their mommies and daddies will never be around to see their graduation.

I dispise smoking and think that it destroys lives. Some employers are also starting to increase and even refuse to insure some people who smoke.

Not so funny now, is it.

Icefreezen 05-01-2006 07:48 PM

I dont smoke much..........but I dip a good amount...all I know is I dont need it but for some reason I do it.......I need to stop

Badfish 05-01-2006 07:50 PM

alot of my buddies dip...now THAT is plain sick

same here... its not as dangerous... most cancer from it is in the mouth and unless you ignore it can be removed ok...

smokin is a pretty scary thing... i gotta agree MTs#1...

but ya'll wanna hear something funny... (not that funny really)

I know someone whoes father died a year or two ago...

he was 93, yes i said ninety three... he smoked filterless camels since he was very young age... a few packs a week (he didnt smoke 3 packs a day)...

but anyways... its weird how somepeople are completely immune to the effects and others get cancer after smoking for 3 weeks...

Thanks for the lecture pops, but i think the thread was lookin to see if anyone found anything that really aids in quitting smoking, not saying that smoking is fun or great. so. im not really sure what the "not so funny now is it" thing was about, but.... yah....

just looking for a little support and encouragement, not a lecture.

That was my grandfather right there. Smoked since he was a kid, lived 88 years. At that point, im not sure how much you can attribue it to smoking. LOL. who knows. he mighta have lived to see 89?

Well, i have his blood in my veins, but i think it would be better to be safe than sorry.

smedly 05-01-2006 09:04 PM

2 pack a day habit from 17 till I was 30.I used the patch for about 3 days.It gave me freakin WIERD nightmares, went cold turkey. Its been almost 8 years now.The first month is a beyotch. After that its a cake walk.

dannyb785 05-01-2006 09:17 PM

I've heard similar stories of people living forever without any smoking-related illnesses. Shoot, my grandma has smoked since she was 15 and is almost 70 with not ONE cancerous tissue in her body. However, even if you KNEW you woudlnt get anything from smoking, think about how much money would be spent in a lifetime on cigs, also how bad you smell when you smoke, and how crappy you feel when you don't smoke. It's just not worth it.

As for those who smoke weed or other drugs(and want them legalized and all that ridiculous BS)....you've got alot of growing up to do.

And the dip...thats more disgusting than smoking...youre chewing sh*t almost literally and the bulge in the bottom lip part just looks retarded. Then you get a cup to spit it into...yeah i bet that turns the ladies on.

one last quote

if the girls lookz damn good..then that would overpower the nastyness
sorry bro. When youre makin out w/ a girl, usually your eyes are closed so it dont matter how goodlookin she is, I ended up coughing once kissing a girl who smoked while I was in 7th grade...and I've never kissed a smoker since. Worst taste ever.

MattJ 05-01-2006 09:17 PM

I dont smoke but I guess i take what I would of smoked and added it to drinking so... probably worse off.

Hey, no problem. I can't help it but lecture on the topic, what I preach is what I believe. Most people that I know that have quite simply do it "cold turkey". Most of them generally get motivated from an event in life that scares them.

If people want to smoke themselves to death, that is their own business. Just be sensitive to those that love and care for you and educate yourself on all the consequences.

By the way, I burried a daughter a few years ago to cancer, not smoking related, but that was my life-altering experience. It really is a ****tty way to go. She did nothing wrong and got sick, so I hate to see people throw their lives away.

There will always be those that defy the odds, Just like running out in front of traffic, you might not get hit by a car, but that does not make the behavior safe.

If you want a quitting aide, visit the 7th floor West of Hershey Medical Center. If you can smoke after that, then well, nothing might work.
