What is backset/offset

What is backset/offset and how do i measure it?? i was looking on ebay for rims and it said that the bolt pattern was 4x4.25 and offset was 3.751 *19mm

ummm, aren't mustangs 5x4.5 bolt patter? or is that just an example?

i have an 89 stang and they are 4x4.25
