A guy quoted me 1200 for gear installation...

yeah...I know. no need to tell me how nuts that is, and i will NOT pay it, but he also was like "well gears themself cost 3-400" and I kept thinkin about mt's that cost under $200, and I kept assuring him that i mean strictly rear end gears like 373 or 410 and her persisted.

Now, granted this is a ford dealership...but what should I realistically pay for the installation labor of putting gears in. The guy told me its a 5-6 hr deal...but..is it really?

Install time (list) is 4.2 hours for 8.8 rear end. Have someone do it as a side job and it will save you a lot of money. I work for a dealership and I had mine installed for 80 bucks.
:D

what is that 8.8 rear end that youre talking about?

the 8.8 rear end is the size of the carrier or pumpkin or what ever you call it. It's what your gears and differential go in. It comes on all GT's and mach 1's (not sure what the cobra is since it's IRS, but I think it's 8.8) V6 mustangs come with the 7.5 inch carrier.

4 hours for install.......240.00 4hrs@60 bucks
gear oil..................8.00
Pinion Bearing.........22.00
friction modifier.......5.00

Total after tax........277.71 + approx 200 for the gears

approx 475.00 and well worth it.

I paid 200 bucks for my installation. Then the bearing kits and speedcal were about 180 bucks more, then gears at 150 bucks, so about 500 bucks all said and done.

StangAddict 10-28-2005 06:15 PM

i paid 450 and the guy was done and i was gone in an hour

Payed only $210 with Royal Purple and he gave me a better gasket than what the kit came with. And he took his time and showed me how to do it.

Yeah, actually, it is very common for mechanics to take advantage of women who come in wanting work done. Maybe you should get a male friend to come with you, i wouldnt be suprised if he quotes you a lot less.

I bought my gears here and had them installed at a Mustang only performance shop (CJ Pony). I consider their work completely professional and all they do are stangs. The total job was around $500. I have heard of some places charging $1000 and I know of some guys that have done the whole thing for $300.

I did everything for ~300...

Then again, I have connections.

haha Slappy that was good. I needed that laugh.
